Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a set of disorders in which the ovaries either release more than one egg or don’t release the egg cell at all. It also includes excess androgen levels and weight gain. Hair loss and excess hair growth will also affect people who have this syndrome.
Hormones directly or indirectly control the different bodily systems and functions. Therefore a disorder affecting the parts that produce hormones may all entirely affect the whole body as well.
The Hormones controlling the sex characteristics of women as well as their ovulation cycles are estrogen and progesterone. While for males, it is the androgen testosterone that controls their sexual development. Both male and female have both male and female hormones; they only differ in their concentrations. A slight imbalance or an increase in one of these hormones may have a drastic effect to one’s body.
Direct Cause
For women with PCOS, they have over secretion of the male androgen; therefore, they tend to have secondary male characteristics. A major problem caused by this is the hair loss experienced by women with the said condition.
The testosterone in the female’s body is converted to dihydrotestosterone. It then binds to the hair follicle and causes the new hair to be produced to be much thinner. Each cycle of hair growth produces thinner hair until it becomes unnoticeable and falls off.
This increase in the male hormone is part of the syndrome; therefore PCOS hair loss is merely an effect of the hypeandrogenism-increased levels of the male androgen. It is interesting to note that this problem is not permanent. This also means that in the treatment of PCOS, if the testosterone levels are restored or the testosterone-estrogen balance is restored, the side effect that is hair loss will gradually disappear.
