Can ovarian cysts be cancerous?

Some ovarian cysts can become cancerous. These are all rare cancers and are most common in women in their fifties. Cancerous ovaries are usually not painful unless they grow very large before they are discovered. Annual pelvic exams are the best preventative method for detecting gynecologic cancers in the early, most treatable stages.

Causes of cysts on the ovaries are a sadly overlooked topic. When it comes to dealing with ovarian cysts it is much more common to focus on symptom relief. Although relief of suffering is clearly the objective of treatment, focusing on removing the symptoms does not help one to resolve the underlying cause of this issue.

Causes of cysts on the ovaries and PCOS or polycystic ovarian syndrome are varied, and multifaceted. They range from metabolic to genetic and these factors themselves are affected by our stress level and diet as well as our generic predisposition to this condition.

Evidence seems to support a genetic link to ovarian cysts and PCOS. That is not to say the cysts themselves have been inherited, but rather the environmental factors that they require to flourish may be genetic. In the case of PCOS and ovarian cysts, although one may be predisposed to developing cysts, there are many factors that contribute to whether or not the condition will appear.

The insulin system is the body’s way of managing sugar. A strong link has been established between causes of cysts and insulin resistance.

Insulin resistance is a metabolic condition that is directly related with weight gain and cyst development. Insulin is produced by the pancreas and is released into the blood stream in order to regulate blood sugar or glucose. When this process is out of balance due to a combination of environmental and lifestyle factors, the results are insulin resistance.

In this state, blood sugar rises, insulin is released, but the body does not properly respond. The glucose that we ingest, in the form of sugar and carbohydrates, is converted by our bodies from calories to energy. When one suffers from insulin resistance, sugar is stored as fat rather than metabolized as energy.

Evidence suggests that increased levels of androgens – male sexual hormones, in the bodies of women with cysts may be related to insulin levels. Insulin resistance is very common among cyst sufferers.

In a healthy woman’s body, small amounts of androgens are created. For a woman with ovarian cysts, just slightly higher quantities are detected. It’s this small difference that leads to a large chain reaction, and results in the following:

  • Irregular ovulation or the stop of ovulation
  • Infertility
  • An increase in facial and or body hair
  • The development of acne

The release of the androgen testosterone is responsible for the chain reaction which prevents the egg from being released by the follicle each month. When this is the case, the result is infertility.

Understanding that stress is one of the causes of cysts is also important. Stress is a factor that has an “umbrella effect” upon the body. Stress can have a wide array of consequence on how the body heals and defends itself from internal conflicts and external intruders.

When we think of stress, many people picture it as an emotional state – being aggravated, short tempered, emotionally volatile and even angry. The fact of the matter is that stress does cause visible emotional and behavioral consequences, but stress also triggers a chain of biological responses in the body. Some of the immediate physiological consequences of stress:

  • Increased heartbeat
  • Headache
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Back pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Digestive issues, such as nausea or diarrhea.

Prolonged stress has a great impact on multiple systems in the body and can affect the immune system making you more prone to illness of all types as well as cysts.

Stress is linked to low fertility rates, and painful menstruation. Cortisone released during stressful times causes an increase in your blood sugar levels and contributes to insulin resistance.
