We are celebrating the birth of my cousin’s grandson, Caiden. He was born this morning at 12:03 weighing 8 pounds and 11 ounces. He is 19 ¼ inches long. He arrived two weeks earlier than his allotted 40 weeks. Just imagine how much he would have weighed if he had kept to schedule!

Large newborns are common in our family. Several of my aunts and cousins have delivered ten-pounders. My own children weighed nine-plus pounds at birth. Caiden is a large baby, not only because of our family genetics, but because his mother, Kara, has diabetes.

Kara was diagnosed at 12 years old right after she came to visit us. The 600-mile trip from Georgia to Indiana was longer than the ten hours it normally took because Kara had to stop to use the restroom every half hour. Then, she would be so thirsty she needed something to drink. That refilled her bladder which perpetuated the cycle. Kara felt tired a lot of the time, had dark circles under her eyes and had been losing weight over the prior weeks. Her parents were concerned but thought pre-teen stress and dieting was causing the problem.

My mother rode with my cousin and his family on the trip to our house. After tending my diabetic father for almost 30 years, Mom immediately recognized Kara’s symptoms. Mom’s urgent suggestion to have Kara’s blood sugar checked by a doctor once they got home was heeded and sure enough, diabetes was the culprit. She was in greater danger than any of us had realized. Her sugar level was so high it was off the testing chart. They had to dilute her blood to get a reading. She was admitted to the hospital directly from the doctor’s office.

In spite of using an insulin pump and maintaining a healthy diet, Kara’s blood sugar was nearly impossible to keep regulated for many years afterward. She was in and out of the hospital with her sugar levels in the 700 range. When she was making plans for her wedding, her doctor told her she would not be a good candidate for pregnancy because she probably couldn’t carry a child full term without seriously threatening her own life. She and her groom were disappointed not to be able to have children. Fortunately, he is a loving and understanding young man.

Still, the fluctuation in her sugar levels continued and so did the trips to the hospital where it took days to get her regulated enough to dismiss her. She would return days later spiking again. Not satisfied with the care she was receiving, Kara’s parents insisted that she find another doctor.

Once she switched doctors, it was discovered that polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) was causing the severe fluctuations in her blood sugar. It took getting a proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment, but once Kara’s hormones were regulated, her blood sugar level became manageable and she was able to conceive. Under the watchful care of her doctors, her high-risk pregnancy was monitored three times a week. Delivered by Cesarean section, our not-so-small newborn was welcomed into the waiting arms of his mother and family.

I can’t say that treating PCOS will definitely allow a pregnancy to come to a healthy term for everyone, but we are indeed thankful for our “miracle” baby!
