This is probably the most asked question in regards to PCOS. Can I get pregnant? Will I ever be able to have children? It is a scary thought for those of you who’ve always dreamed of a family. The thought of never being able to have children terrified me! The lack of information and education is what causes this misleading, and incorrect thought.
It is a fact that PCOS is the most common cause of female infertility today. This is mostly due to the irregular cycles/ovulation problems and hormonal imbalances, such as high testosterone and low progesterone levels. If you don’t have regular cycles, you won’t ovulate monthly, and if your hormones are out of wack it makes it quite difficult to conceive, and to have a successful pregnancy.
Women who have tried for over 1 year to conceive, with no success, are automatically tagged as infertile. This “Scarlet Letter” can haunt us, and lead to a lot of run-around, constant misdiagnosis, and STRESS. It took doctors well over 9 years to diagnose me, despite the obvious PCOS symptoms that were SCREAMING at the doctors. I am at a loss as to why PCOS is so often misdiagnosed when it is so common. The symptoms are clear and unique, there are tests to confirm it or to rule it out, yet doctors still misdiagnose or ignore our issues….. OR they just tag women as having PCOS when they’re not sure, because they can’t figure out a real cause. Horrible!
Once you are finally diagnosed, you’re often popped full of pills, mostly birth control. Again, as mentioned before its a band-aid fix and certainly does not help those of us who want to have children, it can actually make the problem/infertility issues worse.
The answer to the initial question of, “Can I get pregnant if I have PCOS?” is…..
YES YOU CAN !
Tons of other women with PCOS (including myself) have gotten pregnant, and have had successful pregnancies. It just takes the right “combo” of medications and treatments to achieve this. These medications are best managed by a Reproductive Endocrinologist – PHEW, what a name! An RE is otherwise known as an “infertility doctor”. They are often the most experienced physician when it comes to dealing with the ovulation inducing medications required for women with PCOS to ovulate correctly, and to therefore increase our chances of getting pregnant.
