For many women, being diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is a blessing, and a curse. They are so relieved to finally know what has been causing all these problems for such a long time; having a diagnosis means that you can finally begin treatment. However, after being diagnosed with such a difficult condition, many women feel lost, scared and confused often thinking…. Now what?

First off, educate yourself. This involves asking questions of your doctor, tons of questions! But don’t stop there…. do your own research as well! Go to the library, or research the internet, do whatever you can to learn about PCOS. Find out what treatments are available, what’s involved, the side affects, etc. Not only will this help you understand the condition and all that comes with it, but you will not feel so lost because you now know what to expect and what is needed to control it.

Second, seek out others. Find a support group, whether it be an online forum or message board, or a local support group for women with PCOS. Being around others with the same condition can help you in ways you never thought possible. Hearing their stories, finding out what treatments they used, and just supporting each other through the difficult times is one of the best ways to deal with PCOS. Do not go through it alone, especially when there are so many other women dealing with this condition who are in need of a friend, just like you!

Third, decide on a “plan of attack”. For those who were diagnosed at a young age, you may be thinking about children; Do you want kids….will you be able to have them? Do the research and decide what you will need to do, or what you are open to trying in order to make this happen. If you’ve had your children, or do not want any, you may be concerned about the health risks that come along with the condition (i.e. increased chance of stroke and heart disease). Find out what medications or natural supplements are out there that can assist you in fighting these health risks. Making a plan will help you decide the best treatment(s) for your PCOS and its symptoms. It may also help you feel more in control of the condition, instead of feeling like the condition controls you.

There is no cure for PCOS, however that does not mean it has to run your life. Following the steps outline above can help you keep control of your health, and your sanity!
