Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a health condition that effects between five and seven percent of all women. Statistically speaking, these women are more likely to develop infertility issues. There is, however, something you can do in order to increase your fertility. A PCOS diet can help you increase your chances for conceiving a baby.
You will first need to reduce the amount of refined carbohydrates in your diet. Unlike other fad diets, you should not eliminate the carbohydrates in your diet. You just need to change the carbohydrates you eat. Many processed crackers and snack foods contain refined carbohydrates, so eliminating these foods may be an easy place to start. You will also want to make the switch from white bread to whole wheat bread.
If you are a heavy coffee drinker, you may want to cut back. Some studies have shown that large amounts of caffeine can impact fertility. If you drink one or two cups of coffee a day, there is no need for alarm. Low doses of caffeine appear to not have an impact on fertility. If you are a coffee fiend, you should start curbing that habit. Instead of coffee, switch to herbal tea or plain water. Also, if you are a cola drinker, you should also reduce the amount of cola you drink per day. Cola can contain high amounts of caffeine. Many cola companies produce caffeine free sodas.
You will also need to reconsider the meat that you eat. Much of the beef and meat sold in the grocery store contains hormones. Cows and other animals are injected with hormones at the farms so that they can produce more plentiful and appealing meat. These hormones stay in the meat and do not “cook out”. In other words, you are eating hormones that can impact your fertility every time you eat this meat. If you are trying to conceive, you should avoid eating hormone treated meat. Many markets now sell hormone free meat that you can use in the place of hormone treated meat.
Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables. Many people eat the same foods day after day, but this is not a sign of a healthy diet. When you go grocery shopping, be sure to fill your cart with plenty of green, red, and yellow fruits and vegetables. These fruits and vegetables can provide you with all the vitamins and minerals you need in order to conceive. They can also help flush out toxins in your system that may prevent conception.
If you are trying to conceive, make an appointment to discuss your concerns with your gynecologist. At this point, your doctor may be able to refer you to a nutritionist who can work with you in creating a PCOS fertility diet.
