PCOS Treatment Options 12/10/09 Posted By: Dr. Drew

When you are first diagnosed with PCOS, you may have been very overwhelmed, especially when learning about the effects of this condition. Because of this, you may not have paid close attention to your various treatment options. Your doctor may have suggested only one form of treatment, but there are many different treatments that have been proven effective in the treatment of PCOS.

One of the most common procedures used to treat PCOS is laparoscopic ovarian diathermy. This treatment is also called ovarian drilling. During this procedure, the surgeon carefully burns several places on the ovaries. This can induce regular ovulation and rebalance the patient’s hormonal levels. This is a procedure commonly chosen by women who want to conceive children. However, this treatment is not a permanent solution. The effects of this treatment only last for a few months to one year, so women may repeat this procedure a few times. Repeated procedures can also impact a woman’s fertility.

Another common treatment for PCOS is a drug widely used to treat type II diabetes. Glucophage, or metformin, can be prescribed to women with PCOC in order to help regulate their hormones. Many people are concerned when they first learn of this treatment that their healthy blood sugar levels will become dangerously low. However, this is not the case. The glucophage only lowers the elevated levels of insulin in the body, reducing the excess hormones in the body. The medication does not lower the blood sugar of people with healthy blood sugar levels. The decrease in testosterone levels will stop unwanted hair growth and regular ovulation should return after a few months.

Women who do not wish to become pregnant often choose to take birth control pills in order to treat their PCOS. This medication can help clear up unwanted acne, regulate a woman’s menstrual cycle, and reduce the level of male hormones in a woman’s body. This treatment is a long term treatment. Once a woman goes off this medication, her male hormonal levels will return to elevated levels and the woman’s PCOS symptoms will return again.

It is also important for a woman with PCOS to maintain a healthy weight. The majority of women that have PCOS are also obese, so there is a direct relationship between weight and PCOS. If you are overweight, one of the best treatments for your PCOS is to lose weight. Losing even 10% of your starting body weight can produce excellent results. Many women who lose this amount of weight report that their menstrual cycles are more regulated and some of their symptoms are lessened.

Your doctor is your best resource for treatments for PCOS. If your doctor does not appear to be informed about these treatments or is not receptive to your concerns, seek the help of a doctor who is informed about PCOS. You may also want to join a PCOS support group to learn more about the treatments that are currently available.
