Herbal treatment for PCOS?

Has anyone benefited from herbal treatment for PCOS? If you have could you give the name of the medical herbalist or the herb that helped you to regularise your period?

The number one cause of infertility in women is called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Five to seven percent of all women are affected by PCOS which is a metabolic disorder. If it is left untreated, PCOS can greatly increase the risk of endometrial cancer. To make matter worse, women with PCOS are at a higher risk for such conditions as diabetes and heart disease. In the past, diet was never thought of as an important role in the treatment of this condition. Since the discovery of the benefits of insulin resistance, many experts now are sure that diet plays an important role in the treatment plan.

Even though there is still more research to be done it is still believed that with a proper diet, insulin levels can be reduced which will not only help with unstable menstrual cycles, acne and hirutism, it may also decrease the chances of diabetes and heart disease. Below are some diet recommendations that may help you to control your PCOS.

o Low carbohydrate can cause dehydration so it is very important to drink at least 8 cups of a non carbonated drink. Of course water being the best choice.

o Stay clear of carbohydrates by themselves. Instead, try to combine your carbs with a fat and/or protein

o Make sure you space out the carbs you intake daily. This will ensure that you will have less of a rise in your blood sugar and insulin peak, rather then taking all your carbs in one sitting.

o Make sure you exercise regularly, to help keep you performing at your peak levels.

o Try to not lower your carb intake so low that you go into ketosis. Most pharmacies sell strips that you can test your urine to see where your ketone levels are at. Eating less than 40 grams of carbs per day can start ketosis.

o Make sure to choose foods that are lower on the glycemic index as they will ensure blood sugar to rise more slowly.

o Stay away from the carbs that trigger more cravings and/or hunger such as pasta.

o Suggested mineral and vitamin supplements:

o Take a daily multivitamin with minerals and if you are trying to get pregnant then make sure that it contains a folic acid of at least 400 mcg.

o Try to take two to three 500mg of calcium daily. It is important to space them out as your body can only absorb so much at one time.

o Keep your intake of saturated fats to a minimum for a healthy heart.

As with starting any new diet, be sure to consult the advice of your doctor, to make sure that you are doing what is right for you and your condition.
