Menopause And Yeast Infections – Tips And Advice In Treating Them

Menopause and yeast infections appear to be synonymous. Along with the hot flashes, mood changes and other problems associated with menopause, vaginal dryness is yet another symptom women have to contend with. Let’s explore how vaginal dryness can increase the risk of yeast infection.

The medical term for any infection of the vaginal tract is called vaginitis. The symptoms are very similar to yeast infections in that they include: itching, burning or painful during urination and/or sexual intercourse. One of the most common conditions associated with vaginitis is a yeast infection.

As debilitating as yeast infections can be, it is important to use preventative methods to ensure you do not become a candidate for this condition, especially during menopause. One of the contributory factors is having sex with multiple partners. In addition, the use of foams or jellies or other birth control items can cause infections as well. Try to limit your use of sprays or products that are not natural. Soap and water is the best method to wash your vaginal area.

Due to the fact that bacteria is the catalyst which aids in removing fungus from the genital area, it is important to avoid consistent use of antibiotic medications since they tend to kill the healthy bacteria which is needed. Wear cotton instead of nylon. Nylon does not allow for air circulation, but keeps the moisture in. It is also recommended to use proper hygiene practices when wiping your genital area. Always wipe from front to back, thus decreasing the changes of spreading bacteria from back to front.

Other ways in which you can assist in the dissipation of a yeast infection is to avoid intercourse for a time; take cold baths to relieve the itching; never douche, as you would be washing away the necessary bacteria needed to fight the fungus; and if necessary, use a vaginal cream. More importantly, however, seek advice from your doctor to determine the extent to which the yeast infection can be treated.

While we all experience menopause and its affects; yeast infections can be avoided if using proper hygiene habits. Whether using home remedies or conventional medications, at some point you may have to receive medical intervention of the condition does not go away or if it becomes chro
nic. Although many espouse the use of oils, creams, and other products; it is up to you to research this condition and find an effective method to treat it whether or not you seek medical advice.

You may also wish to research many of the holistic treatments available. For thousands of years, the use of holistic care in treating certain conditions was widely accepted. Perhaps you will discover it is a good alternative to this irritating and often nasty condition.

TTC. What are the symptoms of PCOS?

My fiancee and I are ttc. This is our second month.

Ive always had a feeling that there was something quite not right with my periods and that but didnt really pay any attention until now.

Around day 14 of my cycle i get very tender breasts and i start feeling like my period is coming about 2 weeks before it comes.
My cycles range from 30-38 days and i also get an extreme amount of white sticky cervical mucus.
The first day of my period is absolute agony and then after that all my symptoms suddenly dissappear!

Ive heard that these are signs of a hormonal imbalance which can lead to PCOS.

Can anyone with PCOS or thses kind of symptoms relate to this??

Though since you have PCOS, it could be that you have a large cyst — I had very similar symptoms with my ovarian cyst and it was quite painful when it ruptured. I'd ask for an ultrasound ASAP if they can't tell what's going on just by …

Unfortunately there is no universal definition for the PCOS, but we can guess it from the name itself. Poly cystic means 'with many cysts' and it tells you it's a condition of the ovary having many cysts. By definition a cyst is a fluid …

Yahoo! UK News Message Boards – Pregnancy – No IVF for the overweight?

I am a 27 y.o. married woman who suffers from polycystic ovarian syndrome and due to this have difficulty in conceiving. I have been under hospital treatment for 5 years and have been told I have to lose weight before I get any treatment. The pressure to lose weight is immense and becuse of this I find it extremely difficult. I enjoy the odd take away and bag of crisps but do not sit munching 24/7 which is something medics dont seem to understand. They keep telling me I have plenty of time to have a baby but my husband is now 40 and does not want to be an older dad.
I have been banging my head against a brick wall for years and have actually contemplated drastic measures to lose the weight.

Anyone in the same boat?

Yahoo! UK News Message Boards – Pregnancy – No IVF for the overweight?

Sorry, I've got to jump in here, sorry if I'm repeating what others have posted but only had time to scan the posts briefly.

Can we please get a few things clear? Firstly, no reasonable person is talking about a “right to have” children”. There are no guarantees with IVF, you will not necessarily come out of it with a baby, so the right to have a child doesn't really come into it. The right to free IVF treatment on the NHS is the right to be able to “try to have” children if there are physical/medical reasons why you cannot conceive naturally.

Which brings me to my next point; gays and lesbians do not “choose” this lifestyle – it is the way they were born and does not preclude them from wanting and being able to love and care for a child. In fact, they'd probably make better parents than many heterosexuals as they'd be in a better situation to educate their children about the dangers of prejudice and ignorance, which I strongly believe are the root cause of many of the problems we see in society today (but that's another subject!)

Thirdly, with regard to the overweight/obese and their right to free IVF treatment – what about those women whose weight problem a symptom of the condition which *makes* them infertile i.e. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome? Please don't assume that every overweight person you see is that way because they don't have the self-discipline to restrain themselves or to exercise. Yes, there are people who are overweight due to laziness and greed, but let's not tar everyone with the same brush!

As for those people on benefits – since when did being unemployed make you an unfit parent? What about those people that have been employed for several years but now find themselves on benefits due to redundancy? Are you saying that despite the fact that they've paid their NI contributions, they now don't deserve to get NHS funded treatment because they're out if work? And to the poster who described IVF as a “luxury” treatment – what are you on about?! It's not elective plastic surgery to make your boobs bigger or your nose smaller! This is about one of the most basic human instincts – parenthood.

Come on now, let's be realistic. There is not going to be a huge rush of people creating a burden on the NHS all demanding babies. But I guarantee you, if a bit less money was chucked away on poncey artwork and hifalutin computer systems that don't work then the NHS wouldn't have any problems with funding all types of treatment, from cancer to IVF to drug rehabilitation.

And, in case you're wondering – yes, I do have a vested interest, I'm 33, female, married, of average height and weight, infertile and waiting for IVF (private, via an egg sharing scheme as I am fortunate enough to be able to afford the minimal costs involved when you share eggs and also I get to help some other poor woman who can't produce her own eggs).

Rant over…!

Hey Readers! I’ve been comin across some crazy stuff the past few days from a few different blogs around the web which I just had to share with you. Check em out below…

You may have been trying for a while now and you are starting to wonder if getting pregnant with PCOS is possible. Well, I’d like to reassure you that PCOS, or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is one of the most common causes of female infertility and is also the most successfully treated.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome makes getting pregnant difficult because women who have PCOS generally have irregular or absent menstrual cycles due to the failure to ovulate. This of course makes achieving pregnancy a hit or miss proposition at best. There is also a higher risk of miscarriage due to the hormonal imbalance which negatively affects egg quality and the ability of the woman’s uterus to hold the pregnancy.

In women with PCOS the eggs do not get the required hormones to grow to maturity each month and then several small cysts start to form on the surface of the ovary. This is what is called a “string of pearls” around the ovaries when observed via ultrasound. When ovulation does not occur then the hormones responsible for menstruation are not produced and the start of another cycle is disrupted or delayed.

While there may be a hereditary factor which causes PCOS, the main thing that causes an increase in PCOS symptoms is insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is caused by the inability of the body to metabolize sugar properly. More and more insulin is produced to process the sugar that is consumed. This high insulin state throws off other hormone levels that are needed for proper reproductive function. If not remedied, the woman with PCOS can eventually develop diabetes where the body can no longer produce enough insulin.

Women with PCOS can also have elevated levels of the hormone testosterone. This increased level of testosterone in women can cause acne, excess facial and body hair or male pattern hair loss. Women with PCOS can also have elevated lipid levels and a tendency for obesity and other cardiovascular risks such as high blood pressure and heart disease. These symptoms can range from being embarrassing to life threatening. Women with PCOS can suffer for years and never put the random symptoms together to recognize the underlying problem of PCOS. Infertility caused by PCOS can be the most heartbreaking symptom of all.

Fortunately with proper nutrition and exercise most of the symptoms of PCOS can be controlled or eliminated. There are many things women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome can do to reduce the adverse health effects of PCOS. There are also many fertility treatments that women who want to get pregnant with PCOS can utilize that are effective. It is important to find an infertility doctor who is up on the latest treatments for PCOS so that you can avoid wasting time and money and start improving your chances of getting pregnant right away.

It may take a little while to get your body healthy enough to get pregnant but it is worth the effort and definitely possible.
I think I have ovarian cyst(s). Please help.?

I am 21 years old, and am having some 'woman issues'. I am overweight but otherwise perfectly healthy. From May 2006 to June 2008 I maybe had my period once. I didnt go to the doctor because I was embarassed and didnt have health insurance at the time. In June 2008 I was put on Provera which started my period. My doctor also thought I had PCOS and I was sent in for bloodwork which came back normal. Everything was in working order until this past Feb 2009. It is now the end of June 2009 and I havent had my period since February. I am having really sharp pains over my left ovary area. Im also having some urinary incontinence and ive noticed a change in my bowel movements (sorry if thats tmi). I am making an appt to see a gyno for the 1st time this week. I am also sexually active with my bf of 3 years and recently my ovary area hurts during intercourse. Are these symptoms of ovarian cysts? Im really nervous and any help/ideas/suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks.

How To Recognize Thyroid Menopause Issues

So is the term thyroid menopause really appropriate given that problems with the thyroid and menopause are really two separate issues?

There’s been an increase in awareness of thyroid issues in people, particularly women, in recent times. In fact, women are 8-10 times more likely to experience them than men and should really make an attempt to understand what it is.

It’s easy to “bury your head in the sand” and assume you are just experiencing perimenopause symptoms but you need to understand thyroid problems and menopause can virtually mask each others symptoms.

The term thyroid menopause mainly relates to the time of life a women could experience both. With hypothyroidism, it’s not uncommon to present itself to a woman as early as her thirties.

Similar Symptoms

It’s long list of symptoms also mirrors that of other conditions and not just menopause. It displays symptoms associated with some mental health disorders such as panic attack.

Here’s a short list of symptoms:

- mood swings and depression
- weight gain and weight loss
- irregular periods
- low energy levels and unusual sleep patterns

Do some of the above resonate with you if you are experiencing the early stages of menopause?

The Issue Of Weight Gain

One of the most recognizable symptoms associated with thyroid issues is unusual weight gain. The added problem is this weight is almost impossible to shed.

This is accompanied by an increase in appetite and unless you are aware that the thyroid is closely connected to regulating the metabolic rate, then you’ll more than likely fight a losing battle trying to get rid of the weight. This in itself is a sign you need to check for correct thyroid function.

Other issues associated with thyroid problems include swelling in the legs and arms as well as neck pain, loss of hair and unusual heart rhythms. These are other signs which are not associated with menopause and the “green light” that thyroid issues may be the culprit.

So if you think you have thyroid menopause, think again. Each is it’s own separate subject and the connection lies in the similar symptoms associated with both. If you suspect hypothyroidism may
1000
be an issue with you then the safest course of action to take is to see your doctor.

Yahoo! UK News Message Boards – Alcohol – Alcholol affects or Surroundings???

I used to got out drinking a lot when i was a welder (done thing!!). But my partner said that alcohol changed me and made me agressive, therefore i hardly ever go out. Now, i can go out with people, have many drinks and be extremely happy and no arguments at all. It only seem that i argue with my partner. Now this i found strange because i keep telling her that she starts on me and causes the bloody row!!!! Of course she denies this. For instance, the other day i went out for the first time in weeks with a neighbour. My partner decided to ring me saying that if i weren't back at a certain time then don't ever bother coming back at all (To which i replied FINE). I do admit, that sometimes i get aggressive (not to the point of abuse before you start), but only because i am provoked. I let het go where she wants and never stop her doing anything like going on holidays with her friends etc. So is it the drink or is it her? I would like some input on this as i am trying to understand whats going wrong….. (JAY)

Benefits Of Exercise On Pcos

While there is no scientific proof that exercise helps those suffering with PCOS more than it helps the average person, common sense does tell us that since such a large number of women with PCOS are obese exercise is vital to long-term health.

Exercise helps the body’s cells use sugar for energy, reducing the amount in the blood stream. For PCOS sufferers who are also type-2 diabetic, it’s believed that exercise helps the body use insulin in a more efficient way. But that’s not the only benefit. Exercise has been shown to improve circulation, reduce blood pressure, increase levels of good cholesterol, build muscle and help in weight loss.

Exercise in women with PCOS is also believed to help regulate abnormal menstrual cycles. And although no major studies have been done, exercise is thought to help PCOS sufferers deal with blood pressure issues and even with excessive hair growth due to high levels of male hormone found in women with PCOS.

So, the common sense benefits of exercise are clear. The question is then, what’s the right routine and how do I stick to it? The answer will be different for everyone, but there are a few guidelines you can use. First off, consult a doctor. He or she can help point you in the right direction and make sure you don’t overdo it. The second thing is to keep it fun! Exercise can be so much more than just running around the block until you can’t run anymore, or sitting on a stationary bike in a crowded gym for an hour.

The best way to keep exercise fun and to help make sure that you stick to it is to get an exercise buddy. This way, you can set goals and try to help each other achieve them. You can do tandem exercises like playing basketball or even a spirited game of catch. You can make a list of fun things do to so that every time you exercise, you’re doing something different and things don’t get repetitive and boring.

Also, listen to your body. Don’t overdo things, and if you come back from a day out and you’re sore, it’s ok to take a day off until you feel better.

Don’t be afraid to try unorthodox methods of exercise. Going for a hike in the woods counts just as much as doing a workout tape in front of the TV. Ice skating is a fantastic aerobic workout and can be substituted for a long run. A night out dancing at a club instead of a bike ride works just fine. Don’t be afraid to try new things and keep
1000
your exercise routines fresh and exciting. Getting into a rut of doing the same few things over and over is the number one cause of people giving up on their exercise. The most important thing to remember is to just stay active, no matter what. Since PCOS sufferers are prone to obesity, you have to be extra vigilant with diet and exercise to stay in shape.

How Do I Know If I Have Pcos

PCOS, or polycystic ovarian syndrome is a health condition that affects approximately 8 to 10 percent of all women that have the ability to have children, making it one of the most common ailments women face today. So, how do you know if you have PCOS?
Women that have PCOS usually display the following characteristics:

- Higher than normal hormones (usually male), called androgens,
- Irregular or non-existent menstrual cycle
- They also may have small cysts (small sacs filled with fluid) on their ovaries.

Women with PCOS can experience a wide range of symptoms, including, but not limited to: irregular bleeding in lieu of a period or no period at all. Suffer with infertility or the inability to get pregnant because of a lack of ovulation. An increase of hair growth on the chest, face, back, stomach, fingers or toes. Increased presence of acne and oily skin along with dandruff. Commonly felt is pain in the pelvic area with obvious weight gain, especially around the midsection. The development of type-2 diabetes, high cholesterol and increased blood pressure are also risks. Baldness (male-pattern) or a thinning of hair can occur as can patches of darkened, thickened skin on the arms, neck, thighs and breasts or the development of skin tags and possibly sleep apnea.

The causes of PCOS are unknown at this time. While there is evidence that most PCOS sufferers do have a sister or mother who also has PCOS, there is no concrete evidence showing a genetic connection.

To understand PCOS fully, it helps to have a complete knowledge of the female reproductive system and how PCOS affects women. The ovaries are made up of two tiny organs located on either side of the uterus and are dotted with follicles. Follicles are tiny sacs that contain liquid that keep hold of the eggs. Another name for the sacs are cysts. As with all women, about twenty different eggs in the ovaries begin to grow each month, but most times, only one egg wins out. As that one dominant egg matures, the cyst gathers liquid in it. When the egg reaches maturity, the cyst bursts open to allow the egg to travel up the fallopian tube to be fertilized. This is what is called ovulation.

For women that suffer from PCOS, the ovaries do not make the proper hormones needed for
1000
the egg to fully grow and be released. Most times, the eggs will begin to mature and gather liquid, but no single egg becomes mature enough to be released for ovulation. Instead, the eggs remain in the cysts. Since there is no egg released, ovulation never happens and the hormone known as progesterone isn’t made. Without the hormone, the woman’s menstrual cycle is absent or very irregular. Making things worse, the cysts can produce a male hormone, which further inhibits ovulation.

There is no cure for PCOS at this time, and the onset of PCOS can spell a myriad of health problems. Eating a healthy diet, losing weight, getting pregnant and even enjoying exercise can become a major challenge.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is the primary cause of infertility of most women. Due to excess insulin production a woman’s body produces too much male hormones. Some PCOS sufferers are also in danger of developing diabetes due to insulin resistance.

A woman’s ovaries have numerous follicles and during a normal menstrual cycle these follicles develop each with a egg inside. If everything progress as it should during the menstrual cycle then an egg will be produced from one of these follicles. This matured egg will burst from the follicle when the Luteal Hormone (LH) levels increase. This is the ovulation phase. Unfortunately with someone suffering from PCOS it never reach this stage because due to the lack of the right amounts of female hormones the egg don’t mature and ovulation don’t follow.

For PCOS sufferers this means that their follicles are in danger of developing cysts. When this happens, these cysts, when examined under ultra sound, looks like a string of pearls. The outside of the ovaries are normally covered in a multitude of small cysts and the immature undeveloped follicles inside is what give it the appearance of a string of pearls.

Because ovulation doesn’t happen, the hormone progesterone don’t make the nice thick uterine lining that is needed. Statistics indicate the about five to ten percent of woman are afflicted by PCOS. An irregular or no period at all and no ovulation are normally a sign of possible PCOS.

Older woman also sometimes suffer more from the symptoms of PCOS. Around twenty five percent of women are totally unaware that they might have PCOS. Some woman, despite their irregular ovulation due to PCOS, still manage to become pregnant. Some of the other symptoms of PCOS are unnatural hair growth, especially in areas such as the face, chest or back.

Apart from irregular menstruation, some women also suffer from pelvic pain, obesity, acne, thinning of hair and high insulin levels. Some of the symptoms of PCOS can be alleviated by losing some weight. For women that have difficulty with obesity their hormone levels might even stabilize enough for them to ovulate. Most treatments of PCOS involve the medication called Metformin.

Metformin is normally safe even for diabetics because the Merformin assist the body with insulin absorption. Clomid treatment cause the brain to think that estrogen levels are lower than what they are so more LH and FSH are release that causes ovulation. IVF statistics indicate only a thirty to forty percent ovulation rate that leads to a successful pregnancy when Clomid is used for treatment.

In Vitro Maturation (IVM) is other treatment for woman that due to PCOS are classified as infertile. IVM involve the harvesting of some immature eggs. IVM is normally an option for women that suffer from PCOS that had no success from drug treatments. The immature harvested eggs are, in a laboratory, artificially matured. Once the eggs are matured, they are then further developed , fertilized and implanted into the uterus with IVF.

Most women with PCOS don’t have to despair for most of them can be helped to fall pregnant.

Hope you enjoy the read as much as I did and please if you have something to say, use the comments form below to let everyone know your thoughts.

Have a great day!

Can ovarian cysts be cancerous?

Some ovarian cysts can become cancerous. These are all rare cancers and are most common in women in their fifties. Cancerous ovaries are usually not painful unless they grow very large before they are discovered. Annual pelvic exams are the best preventative method for detecting gynecologic cancers in the early, most treatable stages.

Causes of cysts on the ovaries are a sadly overlooked topic. When it comes to dealing with ovarian cysts it is much more common to focus on symptom relief. Although relief of suffering is clearly the objective of treatment, focusing on removing the symptoms does not help one to resolve the underlying cause of this issue.

Causes of cysts on the ovaries and PCOS or polycystic ovarian syndrome are varied, and multifaceted. They range from metabolic to genetic and these factors themselves are affected by our stress level and diet as well as our generic predisposition to this condition.

Evidence seems to support a genetic link to ovarian cysts and PCOS. That is not to say the cysts themselves have been inherited, but rather the environmental factors that they require to flourish may be genetic. In the case of PCOS and ovarian cysts, although one may be predisposed to developing cysts, there are many factors that contribute to whether or not the condition will appear.

The insulin system is the body’s way of managing sugar. A strong link has been established between causes of cysts and insulin resistance.

Insulin resistance is a metabolic condition that is directly related with weight gain and cyst development. Insulin is produced by the pancreas and is released into the blood stream in order to regulate blood sugar or glucose. When this process is out of balance due to a combination of environmental and lifestyle factors, the results are insulin resistance.

In this state, blood sugar rises, insulin is released, but the body does not properly respond. The glucose that we ingest, in the form of sugar and carbohydrates, is converted by our bodies from calories to energy. When one suffers from insulin resistance, sugar is stored as fat rather than metabolized as energy.

Evidence suggests that increased levels of androgens – male sexual hormones, in the bodies of women with cysts may be related to insulin levels. Insulin resistance is very common among cyst sufferers.

In a healthy woman’s body, small amounts of androgens are created. For a woman with ovarian cysts, just slightly higher quantities are detected. It’s this small difference that leads to a large chain reaction, and results in the following:

Irregular ovulation or the stop of ovulation

Infertility

An increase in facial and or body hair

The development of acne

The release of the androgen testosterone is responsible for the chain reaction which prevents the egg from being released by the follicle each month. When this is the case, the result is infertility.

Understanding that stress is one of the causes of cysts is also important. Stress is a factor that has an “umbrella effect” upon the body. Stress can have a wide array of consequence on how the body heals and defends itself from internal conflicts and external intruders.

When we think of stress, many people picture it as an emotional state – being aggravated, short tempered, emotionally volatile and even angry. The fact of the matter is that stress does cause visible emotional and behavioral consequences, but stress also triggers a chain of biological responses in the body. Some of the immediate physiological consequences of stress:

Increased heartbeat

Headache

Neck and shoulder pain

Back pain

Shortness of breath

Digestive issues, such as nausea or diarrhea.

Prolonged stress has a great impact on multiple systems in the body and can affect the immune system making you more prone to illness of all types as well as cysts.

Stress is linked to low fertility rates, and painful menstruation. Cortisone released during stressful times causes an increase in your blood sugar levels and contributes to insulin resistance.

Yahoo! UK News Message Boards – Pregnancy – No IVF for the overweight?

I suggest that before you start raising the issues of single women and lesbians having children, you should consider what has actually been said in this debate. It is irrelevant whether someone is gay, straight, married or single, the issue at hand is whether they are chronically obese. Im sure that if a chronically obese lesbian wanted IVF, she would be told the same as a straight, married obese woman.

To use the examples of lesbians and single women, to debunk the debate is redundant, homophobic and prejudice.

I also find your approach and comments on gay people's desire for children uninformed and extremley naive.

If anything, we should be encouraging women to undertake such weight reduction, not only for IVF but also for their own personal health in the long term. Surely diet and exercise is not a bad thing to be encouraging.

Painful Ovarian Cyst?

About 6 weeks ago I ended up in the emergency room due to sever abdominal pain. After many hours and exams they found a large complex mass in my right ovary 6cm large. I coulden't even walk or stand up straight. The ER doctor discharged me and told me to see my gyn. I was put on birth control (loestrin 24). During my monthly I am bleeding large dark clots. I also have sharp sudden pains on my right side where the cyst is located. In May 2006 I had an ectopic pregnancy and i had a cyst removed during the surgery and it was located on the right side. Could this be polycystic ovarian syndrome. Why are my doctors no taking action. Should I get a second opinion?
