‘Infertility in women’ refers to the condition in which a woman is not able to conceive or contribute in the conception of a child due to some health issues. In some cases of infertility, a woman may conceive, but might not be able to carry a child until its birth.

Causes of Infertility

There are numerous causes of infertility in women, all of which have been studied thoroughly by the experts and researchers. Heredity is one of the very common possibilities. Some of the typical causes of infertility in women are consumption of drugs and alcohol, smoking, age, diet, and sexually transmitted diseases.

The most common cause of infertility in women is some kind of a disorder in the ovulation process. Ovulation is a very complex process, which most of us fail to understand. It not only refers to the generation of a ‘female egg cell’, but also includes the ‘preparation for fertilization’ in the reproductive system of women. An irregularity in the menstrual cycle is a common indication of an existing problem in the ovulation.

Some other causes of infertility in women linked with ovulation are increased amount of prolactin, tubal scarring, cysts in the ovaries, weight loss, excessive exercise, disorders in the adrenal gland and thyroid gland, obesity and psychological stress or strain.

Solutions to ‘infertility in women’

Infertility is quite a serious disorder and needs to be treated at some point or the other. There are several methods of treating this condition. However, which one you should opt for depends on the cause of its occurrence and the level of severity of the condition. The three main and most effective kinds of infertility treatments and solutions have been detailed below:

Medicinal Treatments – The intake of certain medicines has proved to solve the cases of infertility. ‘Clomifene’ is a medicine used to persuade ovulation in those women who don’t ovulate at all or even regularly. ‘Metformin’ is used when clomifene does not react on the body. This is usually prescribed to women who are afflicted by the condition of PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome). ‘Gonadotrophins’ is that ingredient of a medicine which helps in stimulating ovulation. These medicines must be taken only when prescribed by the doctor.

Surgical Processes – Doctors opt for the surgical processes when some part/s in the ovulation process needs to be repaired or improved. The usual surgical processes that are undergone in the cases of infertility are; ‘Fallopian tube Surgery’ – done to remove the blockages or scarring in the in the fallopian tube, and ‘Laparoscopic surgery’ – done to take samples of the internal organs and perform operations or tests on them.

Assisted conception – Intrauterine insemination (IUI) – The procedure in which sperms are placed in the womb using a plastic tube, In vitro fertilization (IVF) – medication taken to persuade the ovaries to produce additional eggs, egg donation and Blastocyst transfer are the most effective and most commonly adopted methods of assisted conception in the condition of infertility in women.

Any woman who has conducted her own research on ovarian cyst remedies knows that there are countless “cures” out there. Cures range from pills to surgery. The major issue with many popular forms of treatment is they fail to address the underlying issue that causes cysts.

Modern ovarian cyst remedies falsely focus upon treating the bothersome symptoms that plague sufferers. Perhaps is it because almost all women have ovarian cysts at one time in their lives but relatively few experience the symptoms that the underlying issue is not considered important.

Common medical treatments are often pricey and can cause a spectrum of unwanted and damaging side effects in the body. Some frequently used treatments include:

Medication to regulate the menstrual cycle

Because ovarian cysts often cause irregularity in menstrual cycles due to an imbalance in male and female reproductive hormones, oral combination contraceptives are frequently prescribed as a way to regulate a woman’s cycle and reduce bleeding between periods. Birth control pills, even in low doses, may cause a variation of side effects including:

Irregular bleeding or spotting

Nausea

Loss of libido

Breast tenderness

Weight gain and/or water retention

Spotty darkening of the skin

Mood changes

Medication to balance insulin

A common course of action to deal with altered insulin functioning during PCOS and ovarian cysts is the prescription of an oral medication used frequently to treat type 2 diabetes: Metformin. Metfromin is still being studied as a treatment for PCOS. Side effects include:

Nausea

Diarrhea

Vomiting

Gas

Weakness

Indigestion

Abdominal pain

Headache

Medications to increase fertility

Because ovulation is disrupted many women who suffer from ovarian cysts and PCOS find it difficult to conceive. In this scenario, it is not uncommon for physicians to prescribe a medication that will induce ovulation. Clomiphene, an oral anti estrogen medication, is used to trigger ovulation synthetically.

Some side effects of the above treatments include:

Ovarian enlargement, abdominal-pelvic discomfort, abnormal uterine bleeding, Visual symptoms: lights, floaters, waves, unspecified visual complaints.

Surgical Treatments

More drastic treatments, which can be painful and expensive, include procedures such as ovarian drilling. Here, an incision is made in the abdomen; an electrical current or laser is used to burn holes in enlarged follicles on the ovaries in order to trigger ovulation by reducing androgens. Although this surgery is done through a small incision, this does not mean that it is risk free.

Complications include:

Reoccurring cysts even after surgery, persistent pain, scar tissue formation at the site of the surgery, or even on the ovaries and into the fallopian tubes, or in the pelvis. Infection is also a possibility to be considered.

As you can see, all of the above ovarian cyst remedies are effective at reducing symptoms, however they all fail to address the cause of this problem.

Learn how to treat this the natural way now, go to ovarian cyst remedies.

Low GI Diet & PCOS Success?

I am starting the GI Diet on Saturday, just ordered all of my food & created a diet plan with Tesco Diets help!!

Any success stories would be very appreciated.

I have just been diagnosed with PCOS – Polycystic Ovary Syndrome & I have been told that this type of diet would be more suitable as my husband & me are trying to conceive. I am about 12 stone 4 & I am only 5 foot 2 but I am also on steriods for another condidtion called Addisons Disease

Obviously I am exercising 5 times per week.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrinopathies in women of reproductive age. It is the most common hormonal reproductive problem in women of childbearing age. This can affect fertility and pregnancy. It can also cause male-type body changes. Irregular or heavy periods may signal the condition in adolescence, or polycystic ovary syndrome may become apparent later when a woman has difficulty becoming pregnant. Women with PCOS may produce too much insulin, which signals their ovaries to release extra male hormones. It is the most common endocrinopathy among reproductive age women. As many as 30 percent of women have some characteristics of the syndrome. Polycystic ovary disease is characterized by enlarged ovaries with multiple small cysts, an abnormally high number of follicles at various states of maturation, and a thick, scarred capsule surrounding each ovary. PCOS is also associated with peripheral insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia, and obesity amplifies the degree of both abnormalities.

Polycystic ovary syndrome is now recognized as a heterogeneous syndrome. The syndrome was originally reported by Stein and Leventhal in 1935 when they described a group of women with amenorrhea, infertility, hirsutism (unwanted hair growth in women), and enlarged polycystic ovaries. Women with PCOS frequently have a mother or sister with PCOS. But there is not yet enough evidence to say there is a genetic link to this disorder. Many women with PCOS have a weight problem. If PCOS is not treated properly, it can put a girl at risk for lots of problems, such as infertility, excessive hair growth, acne, diabetes, heart disease, abnormal bleeding from the uterus, and cancer. Polycystic ovaries are enlarged bilaterally and have a smooth thickened capsule that is avascular. On cut sections, subcapsular follicles in various stages of atresia are seen in the peripheral part of the ovary.

Causes of Polycystic ovary syndrome

The common causes and risk factor’s of Polycystic ovary syndrome include the following:

No one knows the exact cause of this syndrom.

An imbalance in the hormones (chemical messengers) in your brain and your ovaries.

Excess fat.

Family history of Polycystic ovary syndrome.

Genetics may be a factor.

Symptoms of Polycystic ovary syndrome

Some sign and symptoms related to Polycystic ovary syndrome are as follows:

Pelvic pain,

Irregular periods.

Male-pattern baldness or thinning hair.

Weight gain, even obesity.

Insulin resistance and diabetes.

Patches of dark skin on the back of your neck and other areas, called “acanthosis nigricans”.

Decreased breast size.

High blood sugar (hyperglycemia).

Treatment of Polycystic ovary syndrome

Here is list of the methods for treating Polycystic ovary syndrome:

Weight reduction is associated with normalization of hormonal disturbances and the resumption of regular ovulation. It also has a beneficial impact on the consequences of PCOS (eg, cardiovascular diseases, impaired glucose tolerance, hypertension, dyslipidemia).

For women who don’t want to become pregnant, birth control pills can regulate menstrual cycles, reduce male hormone levels, and help to clear acne.

Cosmetic treatment of facial hirsutism with electroepilation and laser hair removal has also been studied and found to be beneficial.

Reproductive Medicine.

Hormone treatment to suppress ovarian activity is a reasonable choice if the patient does not want to conceive now, and is having problems with excessive hair growth.

Metformin can be taken with fertility medications and helps to make PCOS women ovulate on lower doses of medication.

If medications don’t help you become pregnant, your doctor may recommend an outpatient surgery called laparoscopic ovarian drilling.

South Beach diet & PCOS?

Okay, a little background, I have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), sometimes going on a “diabetic” type diet helps some with PCOS lose weight, which I think would be a good idea for me anyways because i'm at-risk for diabties (my paternal grandmother and oldest uncle both have it) and I really need to lose weight (i'm about 260, and 5'2, so i'm not one of those skinny girls just saying that).

My question is, has anyone (especially with PCOS) had success losing weight on this diet and stayed on it? Any helpful suggestions? I do like meat (which seems to be a plus) as well as fruits and veggies. Part of my problem (according to my doctor) is that I don't eat enough (maybe one meal a day, never eat breakfast) and my body went into “starvation” mood.

One of 20 North American women suffers from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS.) PCOS is a common cause of infertility and it increases a woman’s chances of developing diabetes, heart attacks, strokes and uterine cancer. We have known about this condition for more than 200 years, but only in the last few years have we have found a cause and a cure.

The symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are fat stored in the belly, dark facial and body hair, infertility, acne and irregular periods. A woman is born with about 4 million eggs. Each month one egg ripens and pops off the ovary into the uterus. Women with polycystic ovary syndrome have eggs that remain on the ovary to form cysts. PCOS is diagnosed with a sonogram of the ovaries. The symptoms are caused by high blood insulin levels.

Your pancreas releases insulin when your blood sugar level rises. Anything that prevents blood sugar levels from rising too high lowers insulin and treats PCOS. When these women are given metformin (Glucophage), a diabetic medication, and placed on a diabetic diet, their periods become regular, they lose weight, their acne and facial hair disappear and they become fertile. Women with PCOS should avoid refined carbohydrates (any foods made with flour, white rice or milled corn) and added sugars. Don’t avoid fruits or root vegetables, but eat them only with other foods to slow the rise in blood sugar. If you think you may have PCOS, take this information to your doctor.
