Have you been told by your doctor that you need to undergo a hysterectomy? If so, then you should know as much as possible about the facts behind hysterectomy and its possible alternatives before deciding to go through with the procedure.

To learn if this is the right choice for you, there is an important need for you to understand that hysterectomy is an elective type of surgery. You should also know if it is needed when it comes to saving your life. Remember that while hysterectomy might give you relief from your ailment, it is vital that you look into its alternatives first.

Why Hysterectomy is Necessary

Although you can opt to not undergo hysterectomy even if your physician recommends it, there are conditions that really warrant this procedure to be done. Severe infections, invasive cancers found in a woman’s reproductive system, uterine rupture, and severe hemorrhaging are some of the conditions absolutely requiring hysterectomy. Other conditions that could be relieved with the procedure include fibroid tumors, uterine prolapse, certain hyperplasia cases, endometriosis, and chronic pelvic pain.

Hysterectomy and its Types

Hysterectomy involves the removal of certain female reproductive organs. There are different types of hysterectomy.

* Subtotal hysterectomy. This calls only for the removal of the uterus.

* Total hysterectomy. This is the removal of the cervix and the uterus

* Radical hysterectomy. Also known as hysterectomy with bilateral salpingoophorectomy, this involves the removal of the cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries.

* Supracervical hysterectomy. This does not include the removal of the cervix and it is usually an option for women who have never experienced a unacceptable pap smear.

Surgical Menopause

The removal of both ovaries during a hysterectomy procedure leads to the immediate and possible intense onset of symptoms for menopause. Termed as surgical menopause, this often brings on menopausal symptoms that are considerably more severe than normal menopause and these include longer-lasting and frequent hot flashes. Because of this, it is very important to know your options regarding hormonal replacement before going through hysterectomy.

Recovering from Hysterectomy

You are to expect fatigue and pain after having a hysterectomy because these are normal experiences during the recovery period following a surgical procedure. Recovery from hysterectomy usually takes from a period of four to eight weeks.

You should refrain from having sexual intercourse after a hysterectomy until your physician tells you that it is safe. You are to avoid any pulling, lifting, or pushing activities while you are recovering from the operation and these include lifting children. Even if you feel that you are already all right, you should still not attempt to do any strenuous activities during the set recovery period following hysterectomy.

Hysterectomy’s Effect on Your Sex Life

Hysterectomy leads to the fast decline of sexual hormones. Because of this, women who have a hysterectomy might no longer feel the uterine contractions that normally happen during orgasm. Removal of the cervix will also cause a likely change in the manner penetration may be felt. The vaginal dryness that comes after hysterectomy can be alleviated with the utilization of vaginal lubricants or the intake or administration of replacement hormones. Because of this, there are still women who found their sex life to have been greatly enhanced even after hysterectomy.

Why An Ovarian Cyst Pain Occurs?

Ovarian cyst pain is an inauspicious realness for most of the women throughout their life span. Due to the complexness in the female reproductive system and the procedure of the monthly menstrual cycle, periodic irregularities take place that can also originate ovarian cysts.

Both types of cysts i.e. simple and complex can cause pain during or after the menstrual cycle. If the cyst is functional then there will be a premenstrual pain as it is reacting to the higher denseness of blood-borne hormones taking place during the stage of the menstruation. Some other reason for the pain during the period of menstruation is because having a cyst which is called as an endometrioma.

Growth of an endometrioma, also called as chocolate cyst or endometriod cyst. This specific condition takes place when the tissues that usually arise in the uterus originate outside the uterus, within the peritoneal cavity. The tissues of uterus incline to arise on the surfaces of some other organs in the pelvis or the belly.
Endometrioma developed when these tissues arise on the ovary.

The chances of growing Endometriosis are only between 1 to 10%. These tissues can grow on the surface of any organ in the peritoneal cavity. It has to be remarked that more than eighty percent of pelvicendometriosis is discovered in one or both the ovaries. Endometriomas can be as big as 8 inches and is filled up with dark, reddish brown blood. These can block most of the ovary that causes infertility.

Few women feel no symptoms even though endometrioma is present. However, many women bear terrible menstrual cramps and pain during the sexual intercourse. Ramifications from endometriomas take place seldomly. But if a large endometrial cyst busts, then the material that it consist will leak into the pelvic cavity. This can also lead to the bleeding in the inner organs. These materials of the cyst can also fall over the surface of other pelvic organs such as uterus, intestines, bladder and fallopian tubes. Due to which the formation of scar tissue on other organs takes place. This can also lead to the problems of fertility.

Women suffering form the ovarian cyst may also experience the severe pain and discomfort during the sexual intercourse. Most probably pain occurs in the lower part of the abdominal near vagina and also in the lower back.

Don’t ever ignore,
1000
if you feel any of the above symptoms or any type of unusual change in your body. If it happens, then one should consult a doctor and should take better treatment for the ovarian cyst pain.

Obesity has been sited as one of the reasons for infertility – why should you get treatment, paid for by taxation, and then expect to have your complaint listened to.
Motherhood is not a god given right, get over it.
The NHS was not set up for this kind of expense – people expect infertility treatment, because their greedy consultants encourage this- one thing i have learnt is not to trust this bunch as far as i can throw them – they create the demand for a service, and then bleat on about how this PCT, or that won't fund the treatment.
If neither you nor your fellow can make it on your own, try getting a friend to help out, together with the use of turkey baster, this way, I will sleep more peacefully, knowing that another stupid person is not going to procreate and get more stupid children on this earth, all at the expense of the taxpayer!!!

Back with more news for you today. It’s amazing how much good information there is on this stuff out there if you know where to look. Three in particular that I found really valuable were…

what is pcos?

unfortunately, there is no standard criterion for diagnosing pcos. some doctors may give a diagnosis once a woman shows a minimum of three pcos symptoms while others may use exclusion of other problems to narrow it down to pcos. …

Are You a Carb Addict? | Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Support Blog …

This food habit, in turn, creates weight gain that can exacerbate the symptoms of PCOS. A desire for a particular food can become so overwhelming that it no longer seems to be a simple choice between eating and not eating. …

About This Book

It tells you what's worked and what hasn't for PCOS sufferers, and takes you through what you can be doing for yourself to help reduce your PCOS symptoms, mostly in the area of diet and exercise. I also briefly cover the medical …

Hope you enjoy the read as much as I did and please if you have something to say, use the comments form below to let everyone know your thoughts.

Have a great day!

What is the treatment for pcos?

i am 25 now have pcos,, taking treatment for fertile… there is no much good response…please advice me with good treatment

By now we know that diet plays a key role in PCOS treatment, but with everyone shouting from the rooftops, how can you tell the good diets for PCOS patients from the bad? Below is an overview of three of the best diets for PCOS sufferers. A ‘good’ diet for PCOS is one that doesn’t eliminate necessary nutrients, that a person can really ‘stick to’ for life, and that gives a woman control over her weight.

Weight Watchers

When I sought treatment for my PCOS, my doctor recommended that I join Weight Watchers. I dismissed his advice because I considered Weight Watchers silly or temporary. I have had success with a different diet for PCOS, but have rethought my position on Weight Watchers because it works. Weight Watchers ‘points’ program relies on a simple, effective model – you get to eat a certain number of points per day. If you know you’re going to have cheesecake, you know how many points you have for the rest of the day. One of the traits of ‘thin for life’ people is that they do this automatically – if they ‘splurged’ the night before, they will eat fewer calories either before or after to ‘pay back’ for their splurge.

The beauty of the Weight Watchers points program is in its flexibility. There is nothing you can’t eat, but you can’t eat everything. This is definitely a model you could adhere to for life. The downside is that if you often travel or eat in independent restaurants, you might not know how many points are in the foods you eat.

South Beach Diet

The South Beach Diet at first feels like a fad, because it became so popular and so many people were on it. But it’s not a fad. The South Beach Diet was developed by a heart doctor who wanted to help his very ill patients reverse their disease process. The South Beach Diet is definitely a diet you can stick to for life, it works, and it doesn’t eliminate necessary nutrients. The downside of the South Beach Diet is that it is very restrictive, especially at the beginning. If you are a person who likes rules and limits, and who feels overwhelmed by too much choice, SBD might be the best choice of the diets for PCOS patients.

New Glucose Revolution’s Glycemic Index

The Glycemic Index is not a diet. It’s a rating of how quickly the average body converts specific carbohydrates into blood glucose. For instance, the sugar in a jelly bean very quickly becomes sugar in your bloodstream, while the sugar in an apple is slower and the sugar in a dried apple slice is slower still. For years I suffered from cravings, blood sugar crashes, and intense need to eat that seemed…weird. I wasn’t binging, I was filling a bottomless hole. And I wasn’t eating ‘junk’ in the way most of us mean it. I might eat a baked potato with chili, a salad, and a chicken breast and I’d still be starving. The glycemic index solved that. For me, the GI diet is the best of the best diets for PCOS.

The originators of the Glycemic Index are doctors. They’ve been researching the difference between carbohydrates since the 1970s. They’ve developed diet plans specifically for PCOS sufferers. I’ve been eating by the glycemic index now for 8 years, and I feel no deprivation, no need to ‘break free’. I have eliminated certain foods from my overall diet because they make me feel so sick – like the aforementioned jelly bean. But the feeling of wellness and more, the control I have over my weight and health despite having been diagnosed with PCOS makes me not even tempted to ignore the GI rating of foods. I love the GI diet, I am a fan.

The upside of the Glycemic Index is that you have absolute freedom and flexibility. You can be a vegetarian, gluten free, egg free, lactose free – it’s so flexible that it works with any other dietary needs you (or someone in your family) have. Additionally, if you are a person who eats because of over hunger, the glycemic index can help you reduce the hunger that causes you to eat too much. The downside is that it is not restrictive in a certain sense, and if you’re serious about weight loss, you still have to look at how many calories you’re eating.

In summary, there are many choices of diets for PCOS patients – and they all work! These are 3 diets that you have a good chance of staying with for life, which will give you control over your PCOS weight and related health issues. Choose the one that’s the best fit for you and get going! PCOS is not your master!

1fd1

Christine Ellis has been controlling her PCOS weight for 8 years with the Glycemic Index diet. She is the author of Losing Weight With PCOS, which is based on her experience as a woman with out of control weight gain who took back control of her life. She wants to give other women like her the tools to master their own destiny.

Hey Readers! I’ve been comin across some crazy stuff the past few days from a few different blogs around the web which I just had to share with you. Check em out below…

PCOS, In the Dark but Light at End of Tunnel

The dim light at the end of the tunnel, reading an article about a woman with PCOS and her symptoms was the motivation to find out that PCOS is the handle to the umbrella that is sheltering the warm sun light from shinning on me. …

Removing Ovaries Ups Women’s Lung Cancer Risk | PCOSInfo

Many women who have dealt with PCOS for a while eventually come to the decision of having a hysterectomy. They figure removing all the goods will get rid of the annoying PCOS symptoms. Its been proven that full hysterectomies, …

Polycystic ovaties but not PCOS? – Pregnancy, Birth & Baby Forums …

Unfortunately, you can't diagnose PCOS with just an ultrasound. It could go either way – the cysts on the ovaries is just one of a whole host of symptoms that you may or may not have, but underlying them all is a hormonal imbalance and …

Have a great day!

Yahoo! UK News Message Boards – Pregnancy – Obese to be refused IVF?

I myself have had fertility treatment and had one round of IVF which was successful thankfully. I am a non-smoker and not overweight and did everything I could to be as healthy as possible whilst trying to get pregnant for 8 years.

I got onto the waiting list, and as I am married and neither myself or my husband have any other children. We had to wait 11 months even once we were top of the list as all the years funding had been used up. We do need to face facts that there are limited funds available to the NHS and criteria do need to be set to choose priorities for any treatment.

I mst say that I agree that everything should be done to make it as fair as possible – and IVF is less successful in obese people and smoking damages the unborn child, therefore I believe individuals should need to lose weight or stop smoking to be offered treatment over people who have already done this.

I also believe that childless couples should get priority for the free treatment.

If the NHS funded all IVF without some criteria our taxes would be through the roof OR some other services would have to be cut – something I don't think anyone would want.

This world is not a fair place – but that is a fact of life I'm afraid.

One woman described how she’d had two miscarriages already. The first one was at 21 weeks, the second was at eight weeks. And she found out during her second pregnancy that she had a dermoid cyst on her right ovary. And she writes in that we consulted a doctor that said it wasn’t the cause of my miscarriage, and can I still try getting pregnant? It was almost a year passed since I had my second miscarriage, and I’m trying to get pregnant, but what I just observed with myself now is I can’t get pregnant as easily now like before, any advice?

First of all, the first advice is she had two miscarriages, miscarriages are extremely common. Twenty percent of all pregnancies miscarry before 12 weeks, it’s nature’s way of ridding vaginetic products. The miscarriage at 21 weeks was rather unusual. I’m assuming that this was something that was looked into, and probably was not a cause of anything that would repeat itself. The dermoid cyst on her right ovary, well if she knows she had a dermoid cyst on the right ovary, that must have been removed.

We were probably given part of the information because no doctor’s going to leave a dermoid cyst. As far as her so-called – her concerns about infertility since that dermoid cyst, pregnancy is not as easy as one thinks. Pregnancy – the average couple who have intercourse the average number of times, which is 2.5 times per week will conceive 90 percent of the time in one year, in two years 95 percent. But you still have ten percent that are not going to conceive in one year. So one year of lack of conception is not an infertility concern in my mind. So my advice is just continue trying, don’t worry about the cyst, and hopefully pregnancy number three will be absolutely normal.

Let’s see, there was something else here. Oh, there is an increasing number of women – since we mentioned some drugs, we should mention Tamoxifen. Tamoxifen is an anti-breast cancer drug, the most commonly used. Women are often on it five years, very effective. The good news is Tamoxifen works, being an anti-estrogen effect on the breast, it stops the estrogen receptors.

Because breast tumors many times have – they like estrogen. So this particular anti-cancer drug works by blocking estrogen. But it has some good news too, it has a positive estrogen effect on bone and on the heart. And we know that estrogen can be good for bone growth, that’s why many women are given estrogens after menopause. And it can be good on bone growth and prevent heart disease. The one problem with women on this particular drug though is that it causes in some cases a slight increase in uterus cancers, because it has the positive estrogen effect on the uterus.

And it can in some cases increase any cysts that are there. But to my knowledge there is no evidence that it can cause ovary cancers. So we have some effects from this powerful anti-breast cancer drug that are positive, no ovary bad effects except it can cause an increased size in the cysts. And these would be managed like any other cysts.

I think one thing here is – one woman writes in and she says is surgery a must for a cyst measuring 20 centimeters? 20 centimeters is huge. Greater than 10 centimeters is huge. The answer is unequivocally 20-centimeter cyst is in risk of torsion, it should be operated upon, no questions asked. And we don’t know the age of this woman, but the odds are most likely in her favor because it’s a cyst. And the other one here is -

I have one question I think is very good. Is a hysterectomy the best option for an ovary cyst on a 68-year-old woman, any other options? I’m going to answer that because I’m from the school of thought that says if you’re going in for a hysterectomy in the menopausal years, I believe those ovaries should come out. Now this is Doctor Christopher Freville’s philosophy, many colleagues agree with me, some do not. But the ovary has very little function after menopause. At menopause it doesn’t have any except it can serve as a place for bad tumors and bad cysts to grow.

So if for some reason one has to have a hysterectomy at the menopausal time in life, my strong recommendation would be discussed with your doctor should the ovaries come out. Because unfortunately, ovary cancers, which are not really the topic of this discussion, often don’t show up and have symptoms until they’re somewhat progressed. That’s something I wanted to throw in there.

A cyst can rupture be it a, most likely it’s a follicular cyst or a corpus luteum cyst. These are the so-called functional cysts, or the functional cyst with pregnancy. When they rupture generally nothing happens. In fact, there’s usually a pressure relief.

Because any distended cyst is often what gives, as a cysts nerves are increased by the distension, by the fluid, that’s often what causes the pain. The relief of the pain comes whenever it ruptures. Often like, unfortunately a ruptured appendix. Sometimes when a patient feels an appendix ballooning up and brings him to the doctors the fact that the appendix becomes distended. Immediately after that there’s a rupture and they don’t feel the pain. Unfortunately what causes the problems with ruptured cysts is if the cyst has a very rich blood supply and that blood supply, the arteries start pumping blood and don’t seal off and the abdomen can fill up with blood. And I’ve dealt with many cases both as an ectopic pregnancy, but the conditions usually much worse, but also, as a, rarely as a ruptured cyst that’s bleeding off a cystic pregnancy. And often times the abdomen can literally become distended. In a severe case woman can go into shock meaning their blood pressure falls out, it’s an emergency, life threatening situation that if undiagnosed can be fatal. Fortunately, with emergency rooms being equipped the way they are, doctors being as smart as we are – we rarely miss this. But once in a great while this is a complication. And when the cyst ruptures it doesn’t, you can usually preserve the ovary. Usually it can be sutured over, quarterized. The ovary stays in tact and even in a rare case if it had to be removed, again that does not affect fertility.

Generally if you have weight loss – unexplained weight loss is always a problem and should be looked into by a doctor. It doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s ovary cancer. But a benign cyst, a functional cyst, any of these cysts that we talked about with the exception of the cancerous cysts which are rare, will not be associated with a weight loss. Obviously if we have pain or anxiety about a tumor or cyst often times that’s the cause of the weight loss. As far as weight gain, the weight gain is not because of a cyst. However, in the case of the polycystic ovary it’s a condition that’s sort of related. The cyst doesn’t cause the obesity but they seem to be related. And the reason for polycystic ovary disease is unknown. Dr. Christopher Freville describes it as multi-factor but again one of the treatments I mentioned was to try to get the patient to lose weight and it often helps the other symptoms.

Some health pills such as Noni- Tahitian. Noni-Tahitian is the Indian mulberry Plant. It grows in the South Pacific and like a lot of the natural foods there’s a lot of claims around all of these. In fact Noni-Tahitian, this is just an example. One company called Morinda, Inc. was pretty well known. It was 1998. Morinda, Inc. was investigated by the FDA – Federal Drug Administration, because they were actually labeling their Noni Tahitian, which I think is a drink. I’ve never had it myself. But they had all these claims, and the FDA said listen, we no longer – the FDA in this country will leave a company alone as long as it’s considered a food supplement, nutrition supplement. When you start making claims, as Morinda did, they said, “No you can’t do that.”

They did an extensive investigation and charged them $100,000.00 for that investigation, and had them cease and desist. So any type of health food that claims that they’re going to prevent cysts is unfortunately bogus. I will say while I’m on that, other things that are associated with cysts, women who take estrogens. This has always been a controversy since estrogens came out, and there’s so much data on estrogens.

Drugs like Climara, various forms of Estradiol, Premarin, they’re all various categories of the same type of drug, they’re estrogen supplements. Estrogens do not cause cysts. If anything, estrogens, especially those in birth control pills can decrease cysts. Which brings up a point if a woman on birth control pills, oral contraceptives, develops a cyst, that’s rare.

How to get treatment for PCOS without insurance?

Okay, so I've had PCOS for about almost 4 years.
Last year, I went to a clinic that didn't take insurance, you just paid like $30 to be seen by a CNP. They didn't know much about PCOS and just put me on metformin, I took it for about a month and then they increased the dosage. Again I took it for about a month and then they upped it again. I was on it for 3 months almost 4, watched what I ate and nothing happened except I had really, really bad bowel movements at least once a day, TMI I know lol sorry.
So I stopped taking it, because I wasn't losing weight, I wasn't getting back on track with my cycles, which btw, I haven't had for almost 2 years now.
I'm wanting to conceive with my fiance of 6 years, but I don't think that'll happen naturally. Or at the very least, get my body back to normal again. But, I don't have insurance right now and I can't get on my fiance's until we get married, which isn't for another year or so. So is there any other clinics specifically for PCOS that will work with you if you have no insurance? I feel so helpless and I'm afraid that if I don't get my condition under control it'll do irreparable damage.
Thanks

Can a cyst become cancerous? Now, here’s the big question.

That’s again the cancer fear that all women have. The answer, I’d say is no. This has been looked at pretty, pretty extensively. There was a rather large study I think it was in Sweden. They looked at something like 90,000 – they’ve got a very sophisticated system of registry in Sweden where they can look at data. And something like ninety thousand women were paired with 90,000 normal ones and the various kinds of cysts, endometriomas, the functional cyst, the non-functional cyst. And they said “Well what’s the likelihood any of these women come back for ovary cancer”? And there was no difference. If you had an ovary cyst that was benign you had no increased incidence of having cancer later. The only difference in this was endometrioma which had a slight increase difference. And possibly the reason for that is something to do with estrogen sensitivity around the ovary. But again it’s, it was somewhat more common but it’s nothing to say “My gosh, I’ve got endometrioma, by now! I’ve got to have cancer”. That should be the farthest thing from a persons mind. So I’d say without question your –

The fact that one has a cyst it is not going to develop to, you do not have an increased cancer risk. Now certainly the cystadinomas it’s felt that some of these, these are the benign tumors. Can these cystadinomas develop into cystoadnocarsonoma? The answer is, yes probably. But, once you’ve removed it, the cystadinoma, as well as removing the dermoid cyst, which are very rarely cancer you’ve eliminated that risk. If a woman is going to have a cancerous cyst it’s going to be there from a cancerous cyst per say. She most likely is over the age of fifty and their, in general the reproductive years do not have, a woman does not have to be concerned that a cyst is going to transgress, develop into a cancer.

There was something else I wanted to mention. I’m sure we’ve got several questions, yet I do want to go through these. I think that’s pretty much my overview on cysts and the various diagnoses of cysts, the types of cysts. The treatment we can summarize that at the end.

What happens when a cyst is likely to rupture?

This is probably the number one life threatening complication that New York OB/GYN Christopher Freville has to deal with on an almost basis. A cyst can rupture be it a, most likely it’s a follicular cyst or a corpus luteum cyst. These are the so-called functional cysts, or the functional cyst with pregnancy. When they rupture generally nothing happens. In fact, there’s usually a pressure relief.

Because any distended cyst is often what gives, as a cyst’s nerves are increased by the distension, by the fluid, that’s often what causes the pain. The relief of the pain comes whenever it ruptures. Often like, unfortunately a ruptured appendix.
Yahoo! UK News Message Boards – Pregnancy – No IVF for the overweight?

There is obviously medical evidence which states that IVF is less successful if you are overweight. However, losing weight if you are very overweight takes a lot of time and when it comes to IVF it can take months even years just to complete one round of treatment. If your treatment is unsuccessful then you have to decide whether you want another go, then you have to be accepted for another treatment. It took a friend of mine ten years to have three treatments, some people don't have much time before they are deemed too old to have IVF so to be told to lose weight too can be depressing.
Are smokers allowed to have the treatment, aren't they putting their health and that of the unborn child at risk?
