Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most alarming health conditions encountered by one out of 10 women worldwide. Because obviously, there is a rising number of women having obesity problems, it is believed that the chances for development of PCOS is also increasing. Most patients aim to adopt and use a drug-free PCOS treatment.

There are many simple and practical reasons why patients would naturally opt for a drug-free PCOS treatment. For one, natural treatments are proven to be free from any adverse side effects. There would be lower chances for complications that may result form the intake of a drug. Medications often are also too costly. With the increasing economic crunches, it is just practical if PCOS treatment would be done the natural and less costly way.

It ahs been found that overall and effective weight reduction would always be the best drug-free PCOS treatment. That is because a number of research efforts have found that obesity is a major factor why menstruation and ovulation is affected. Thus, if weight would be lowered to natural and recommended levels, menstruation and ovulation almost always naturalizes.

To attain a drug-free PCOS treatment [http://pcos-treatment.blogspot.com/2007/09/natural-treatment-for-pcos.html], it would be effective if diet and overall lifestyle would be improved. Taking low-carbohydrate food along with regular and strenuous exercise routines would help any PCOS patient shed off weight easily and quickly. Researchers found that is patients would derive carbohydrate requirements from wholegrain, fruits and vegetables, the result would be more tremendous and apparent.

The Missing Link Between Acne, Insulin Resistance And Constipation

Among homeopathic treatments for acne, we find alleviating constipation. Yet presently, no medical studies have made the direct link between bowel regularity and acne. Nevertheless, there is a clear relationship between a hormonal imbalance called “insulin resistance” and acne. Moreover, according to the American Dietetic Association, regularity is great for mitigating acne because regular bowel movements can reduce the chances of developing insulin resistance.

Insulin Resistance & Acne

The pancreas secretes the hormone insulin. The body needs insulin to access the body’s primary energy source- the blood sugar glucose. Insulin binds to key receptors in the blood in order to release glucose as the body requires more energy.

Insulin resistance happens when the normal amount of insulin the pancreas secretes proves insufficient to signal the release of glucose. So, to compensate, the pancreas secretes more insulin in order to free the needed glucose.

Insulin Resistance in PCOS

Insulin resistance, acne, excessive hair and obesity are just a few of the traits that characterize the endocrine disease called polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Substantial research has linked a rise in circulating androgens in PCOS patients to insulin resistance.

An excess amount of the hormone androgen in women promotes facial hair growth and can lead to infertility. Moreover surplus androgen increases facial oil secretion. This extra oil can cause more clogged pores and acne.

Medical Treatment for Insulin Resistance

Treatments for PCOS include the drug metformin. A study published in Gynecological Endocrinology found that treating women with metformin reduced the symptoms of PCOS because the treatment lowered the patients’ fasting blood sugar level and testosterone levels. Testosterone is a member of the androgen family and can likewise lead to acne lesions.

Natural Treatment for Insulin Resistance

Besides using drugs to control insulin levels, the American Dietetic Association recommends a fiber-rich and therefore constipation preventing diet to help normalize the blood glucose
1000
and insulin levels.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends consuming 31 grams of fiber per day. Getting this amount of fiber would take enjoying roughly one of the following groups of fruits and vegetables:

7 raw avocados

13 fresh bananas

7 cups of blueberries

9 small apples

31 baked potatoes

15 red peppers

3 cups of cooked lentils

Surprisingly, regardless of all the health benefits of eating fruits and vegetables, the Food and Drug Administration still reports that Americans are not eating enough of Nature’s harvest.

In short, insulin resistance creates an upsurge in androgen hormone. And so, staying constipation free reduces the likelihood of developing insulin resistance and having more circulating hormones that can provoke an acne outbreak.

Whatever your acne facial regime involves, make certain to enjoy a few constipation-preventing foods like oat bran, spinach or apples everyday.

Yahoo! UK News Message Boards – Pregnancy – No IVF for the overweight?

You are wrong to assume that IVF is available free throughout the UK as this is not true. I am from Leeds and through no fault of my own I had to have both my fallopian tubes removed at age 29. I was given a course of IVF which was unsuccessful and that is it !
I have been with my partner (male) for 19yrs , have never drunk, smoked, been overweight and have always been in employment. I feel I should have the right to IVF on the NHS as my income is not good and we manage to get through each month without much left over to save for the appprox. £4000 charge in my area !
People can have breast enlargements , sex-change operations etc on the NHS because they are depressed about their bodies and yet no-one seems to care that I am depressed about mine !
The system is far from fair !

Truthfully, I think this world is too over-populated as it is, without helping certin people bring more children into this world just to consume them in thier problems..obesity is a problem, statisically most obiese women were abused in thier childhoods in some way.How can they teach a child to be healthy when they are not.If they got help with what is making them obiese, and started the work to be healthy from the inside-out then they would lose the weight, and until that someone is doing those things why should anyone help them bring a child into the world? As far as comparring them to gays/lesbians-totally differant..if God wanted you to raise children like that then you’d not need the help in the first place!!Obiese women atleast deserve the chance to GET healthy first!!

My so called “friend” (not to my face… but still what a bi*ch) called me a fat **** to my friend and said PCOS is a pathetic excuse for being overweight. It really upset me especially as i eat healthier than her and exercise more often… i DO try but its really hard.

Apple Benefits – Keep Yourself Healthy

The nutritional benefits of apple juice (as well as applesauce and many other apple products) are often underestimated because these foods are “quietly virtuous.” When closely evaluating the nutritional composition of apple juice and other apple products, it becomes apparent that the lack of fat, cholesterol and sodium are just a few of the many reasons these products are an important part of a healthful dietary regimen.

The virtues of apple cider vinegar seem to extend itself beyond normal peripheries. Every constituent seems to play an important role. The malic acid and acetic acid present help to combat fungal and bacterial infections and relieves painful joints. The malic acid dissolves the deposits of uric acid, which form around the joints, and slowly pushes the acid deposits out of the body. It seems to even have some effect on viruses. The amino acids present in apple cider vinegar act as an antibiotic and an antiseptic. It has been known to drastically reduce the toxicity in the body. This is because the acetic acid is able to form acetate compounds, which are not so toxic. This property makes it very useful while treating insect bites and skin allergies.

Apple extracts from selected apple varieties were added to human liver cancer HepG2 cells to determine if the extracts could inhibit tumor cell proliferation. There was a large variation in the effects of the different apple varieties on the inhibition of cell proliferation, but all apple varieties inhibited liver cancer cell proliferation. Apples without skin were less potent in inhibiting HepG2 cell proliferation whereas apples with skins exerted greater inhibitions of cell proliferation.

The insoluble fiber is known as roughage or dietary fiber, as it cannot be digested by the enzymes in our bodies and helps us lose weight by giving the sensation of having a full stomach, of having eaten enough. Also found in the skin of the apple, the insoluble fiber is a great remedy against constipation because it helps digestion and prevents other related disorders like irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulosis disease that may lead to colon cancer, appendicitis, hemorrhoids, hiatus hernia, gallstones etc.

Apple is a rich source of flavonoid and polyphenols both are powerful antioxidant.

The skin of Apple contains pectin that can help remove toxic substances from the system by supplying galacturonic acid. Pectin helps prevent protein matter in the intestine from spoiling.

Raw apple cider vinegar is brimming with enzymes. Did you know that our bodies produce a finite amount of enzymes naturally, and that rest of these powerful little digestive aids must be obtained from the foods we eat? Cooked foods have no enzyme activity. Raw foods contain some enzymes. Raw, fermented foods, like apple cider vinegar are the most bountiful source of enzymes.

When diluted with water 50/50 it is often used as a toner for the face. Caution should be used when applying as cider vinegar is very dangerous to the eyes.

Apples commonly enjoyed by many cultures, but they are also a good source of antioxidants. When compared to many other commonly consumed fruits in the United States, apples had the second highest level of antioxidant activity Apples also ranked the second for total concentration of phenolic compounds, and perhaps more importantly, apples had the highest portion of free phenolics when compared to other fruits This means that these compounds are not bound to other compounds in the fruits, and the phenolics may be more available for eventual absorption into the bloodstream.

Hey Readers! I’ve been comin across some crazy stuff the past few days from a few different blogs around the web which I just had to share with you. Check em out below…

pcos and diet – is there a diet to relieve pcos symptoms?

it is estimated that about five percent of women are affected by pcos. patients should seek medical advice, but diets can also play an important role in the treatment.

Polycystic Ovarion Symptoms During Pregnancy | Personal Health Coach

Polycystic Ovarion Symptoms During Pregnancy. Monday, September 28th, 2009 at 2:14 pm. Personal Health Coach You are pregnant! Congratulations! You may have PCOS (polycystic ovarion syndrome) but you beat the odds and are now pregnant. …

Hope you enjoy the read as much as I did and please if you have something to say, use the comments form below to let everyone know your thoughts.

Have a great day!

Different ways to treat PCOS, and getting pregnant and possibility’s of it resulting from Candida Yeast?

OK, I have had PCOS for at least 3 – 5 years. I am trying everything I can to get better/pregnant. I have changed my lifestyle around the ways I eat, sleep, exercise, and have sex. I have consulted with almost 10 doctors, OB-GYN’s, and everything else imaginable. I have tried medications (Clomid, Metformin, etc.), Vitamins, and nothing seems to work.

I have done hours and hours of research, and I have pretty much gone to the limits to try and get rid of my PCOS. If there are any great tips out there that have personally worked for you, I am willing to try to get rid of this. My periods are semi-irregular. I get them about every 35-45 days, and fortunately have been since November of last year, which is new for me. I did miss march, but it was weird how it worked out.

After hours of research, I also found this:
“Candida is a fungus that is found in the body in benign amounts, but when given the correct circumstances, grows uncontrolled throughout the body. It most commonly resides in the small intestine, but it often runs from the sinuses down to the groin.

Candida is known for causing, or being a part of, reproductive organ problems, such as yeast infections, endometriosis, PCOS, impotence, and fertility problems. Other symptoms may be difficult to pinpoint. The most obvious is yeast infections, especially chronic yeast infections. It can also cause depression, gastrointestinal problems, allergies, and a variety of other symptoms. Candida makes a person crave sweets, grains, and cheese and makes you eat when you’re not hungry and/or more than you need. It can lead someone to become overweight.

A candida yeast overgrowth is caused by eating too many foods that feed the fungus, such as the foods mentioned above. However, most people get it from taking oral antibiotics, which end up killing all the bacteria in the body, including the good bacteria which keeps the normal levels of candida benign, allowing the fungus to grow to massive amounts.”

Source: http://www.steadyhealth.com/how_to_get_rid_of_pcos_t177577.html

Now if this is true, this is very possible for me! I am CONSTANTLY craving sweets/chocolates, and when I first found about that I had PCOS, I had chronic yeast infections, and in about 2 years I had about 10-15 of them. And since then, I get about 1 or 2 a year.

Is this a possibility for me? How do I get checked? What are some treatment methods (Vitamins, Home remedy’s, prescriptions, etc.)? And will my PCOS go away by treating the Candida, and if so, will I need a scan again/how will I know? Can anyone else testify to this Candida Yeast issue, and what worked for you?

Thanks for your time.

PCOS, Vitex and TTC . . help?

ok so i went off the pill on 15th June and have had no period since then . . i started taking vitex on monday to try and get my period up and running and we have been ttc but have had nothing to try and calulate ovulation . . on wednesday night i noticed when i went to the toilet there was some blood of a pinkish colour and since then nothing . . i have also today been diagnosed with PCOS . . it just seems like everything is against me no matter how hard we try ..

so i was wondering how many of you with pCOS conceived naturally?? . . and if vitex will help me conveieve even though i have PCOS?? . . also if you were overweight with PCOS was there anything you did differently once diagnose to conceive??

The pain, frustration and even danger of having PCOS are largely ignored by mainstream medicine which has no clear answer or solution to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. The harsh drugs that can be prescribed and the lack of direction by many doctors has led to many women asking is there a natural remedy for PCOS?

Before we can delve into remedies we need to make clear what we are dealing with. PCOS is an irregularity of the ovaries that one in ten women suffers from, that causes serious hormone imbalances. A PCOS sufferer has increased levels of male hormones known as androgenic hormones which includes the most commonly known one testosterone and many others. Women’s bodies are not designed to handle too much of this hormone however and it can seriously effect many parts of the bodies chemistry and workings. Known symptoms of PCOS include:

Infertility

Weight Gain

Acne

Facial Hair Growth

Irregular Menstruation

Ovarian Cysts

Insulin Resistance

Strokes

Not every woman suffers from all of these symptoms of course as it effects everyone in different ways but most women with PCOS suffer from one or more of these problems.

Modern medicine has so far had little lasting affect on PCOS as the hormone balancing drugs they give have harsh side effects and can cause more problems than they solve. They are also only temporary and once you stop taking them the PCOS has not gone.

So what about a natural homeopathic remedy then? While many traditional doctors dismiss claims of naturopaths that a lifestyle change can create dramatic changes in a persons body there is mounting evidence and many testimonials of women who have undertaken natural cures that involve changes of diet, some additional supplements and exercise and sleeping regimes that has changes the way their body works. Proponents of natural remedy believe that giving the body the right fuel can lead to the body self healing and regulating the hormones naturally without the use of harsh drugs.

So is there a natural remedy for PCOS? All signs point to yes on this subject and for those that support natural cures as a solid alternative to modern pharmaceutical medicine this is a real win!

The Most Common Causes Of Female Infertility – General Information

For some women, having a baby is one of the most rewarding experiences in life. That’s why it’s so frustrating when, time after time, pregnancy tests come up negative. Each year, over 2 million women are affected by infertility. For many, the condition is temporary and treatable. Sadly, for some, infertility is a permanent problem.

Most cases of female infertility stem from disorders of the reproductive tract or the ovulation process. Sometimes the cervix is too narrow or becomes blocked, denying sperm access to the woman’s reproductive organs. Blocked fallopian tubes can also prevent pregnancy from occurring. Sometimes the lining of the uterus is too thin, and a fertilized egg cannot attach to it. Congenital defects of the ovaries and uterus can also cause infertility.

Ovulation is a normal monthly occurrence, but some women have underlying medical conditions that keep them from ovulating properly. In fact, according to the Mayo Clinic, 25% of all infertility cases are linked to ovulation disorders. Sometimes a woman’s ovaries don’t produce enough reproductive hormones to facilitate pregnancy. Such hormonal defects can also occur in the hypothalamus or pituitary gland. Ovulation disorders can cause women to ovulate at irregular intervals, infrequently, or not at all.

There are several diseases which can lead to female infertility. One is pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), infections of the reproductive organs which account for the majority of female infertility cases worldwide. Another is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This condition causes the ovaries to produce too many male hormones, called androgens. Endometriosis is another condition which can interfere with fertility. Women with endometriosis experience the irregular growth of uterine tissues. Having the extraneous tissue removed can cause scarring within the uterus, resulting in a surface that fertilized eggs cannot attach to. Tumors in the uterus, whether cancerous or benign, can also prevent reproduction.

Finally, age is a common cause of infertility in women. After the age of 40, women have only a 5-10% of becoming pregnant with each ovulation. While dis
1000
eases might play a role, most age-related infertility is caused by decreased hormone production.

Luckily, for many women, infertility can be reversed through medical care or in vitro fertilization (IVF). The prospects will become even stronger as more research is carried out in the field of female infertility.

Women’s Hair Loss

About 15 percent of women have hair loss, also known as Alopecia or pattern baldness. Hair Loss usually develops gradually and may be patchy or diffuse (all over). In women, androgenic alopecia is probably the most common.

Loss of hair is more than a minor cosmetic problem. It has to potential to make you feel vulnerable (naked), and can cause unfavorable changes in how you feel about yourself.

Roughly 100 hairs are lost from your head every day. The average scalp contains about 100,000 hairs. Hair grows from its follicle at an average rate of about 1/2 inch per month. Each hair grows for 2 to 6 years, then rests, and then falls out. A new hair soon begins growing in its place. At any one time, about 85% of the hair is growing and 15% is resting.

Loss of hair or baldness occurs when hair falls out but new hair does not grow in its place.

Causes of Hair Loss in Women

The cause of the failure to grow new hair is not well understood, but in the case of women with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), excessively high levels of androgens (male hormones) are thought to be primarily responsible.

A male hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is converted from testosterone, binds to sites on hair follicles and appears to make the follicles go into their “resting” phase sooner, which in turn starts to cause the hairs produced by those follicles to become thinner and thinner with each growth cycle.

Women with high or increasing levels of androgens, such as women with PCOS or who are menopausal, may find that the hair on the head is thinned, while facial hair is coarser. Although new hair is not produced, the follicles remain alive, suggesting the possibility of new hair growth.

It appears that sex hormone imbalances or fluctuations are responsible for most female hair loss, including those who have PCOS, recent pregnancy, menopause, postmenopausal trauma, or birth control side effects.

Androgenic alopecia is hair loss due to a male hormone imbalance, and is probably the most common cause for hair thinning and loss in PCOS women.

However, androgenic alopecia is not to be confused with estrogenic alopecia, which is due to a fall in estrogens.

In contrast to testosterone, estrogen helps hair grow faster and stay on the head longer, resu
1000
lting in thicker hair. This is the reason women’s hair gets fuller during pregnancy when estrogen levels are quite high, then sheds several weeks after the baby is born. Estrogen-deficiency alopecia generally starts around menopause. Because estrogen levels start to fall before periods stop, this form of female hair loss can be the first sign of approaching menopause. But sometimes the alopecia does begin until a few months or even a few years after menstruation has ended. Not all women get noticeable alopecia after menopause but most have at least mild thinning.

Many PCOS women also have thyroid problems, usually hypothyroidism (low thyroid function). Not only does hypothyroidism contribute to weight problems, it can also contribute to hair thinning. Some women with PCOS have both an excessively high level of testosterone and an underactive thyroid. It’s not uncommon to have multiple factors involved in female hair loss.

Insidious poisoning with heavy metals such as lead, mercury or cadmium can show up as hair thinning. Sources are everywhere in the environment. Be particularly interested in this if you have lived near a mining site, or worked or lived with someone who works in an industry that uses metals. If you smoke tobacco, you get a lot of cadmium. A hair analysis can indicate abnormally high levels of these heavy metal toxins. If you want a hair analysis, or have high levels of metals showing up in a hair analysis, consult with a Naturopathic Physician or a Registered Medical Doctor.

Other possible contributors to Hair Loss or hair thinning in Women

01) Anemia
02) Any hypothalamic or pituitary disorder (glands in the brain)
03) Any thyroid, liver, adrenal or ovarian disorder
04) Childbirth
05) Drug toxicity – anesthesia, chemotherapy
06) Eating disorder – anorexia, bulimia
07) Essential fatty acid deficiency
08) Protein deficiency (common with vegetarian diets)
09) Severe infection
10) Severe stress
11) Starting or stopping birth control pills
12) Various medications, including bromocriptine, beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, amphetamines, anticholesterol agents
13) Mineral or vitamin deficiency – zinc, manganese, iron, vitamin B6, biotin
14) Perms, hair color, bleach, improper brushing/combing, hair styles that pull on the hair
15) Autoimmune disease such as lupus
16) Any sex steroid imbalance such as low progesterone, estrogen dominance
17) Allergies
18) Recent hepatitis B shot.

The typical pattern of female pattern baldness is different from that of male pattern baldness. The hair thins all over the head, but the frontal hairline is maintained. There may be a moderate loss of hair on the crown, but this rarely progresses to total or near baldness as it may in men.

Main Symptoms of Female Hair Loss

1) Thinning of hair over the entire head
2) Mild to moderate hair loss at the crown or hairline.

Female pattern baldness in the advanced stages can be severe thinning of the hair and may lead to be permanent Hair Loss if appropriate treatments are not used.

Natural Hair Loss Remedies

Saw Palmetto is a natural substance that inhibits the action of testosterone, the hormone primarily responsible for female hair loss.

Frequent shampooing is advised if you have an oily scalp with thinning hair. These surface oils contain high levels of testosterone, which can re-renter the skin and affect the hair follicle.

A deficiency in essential fatty acids may result in dry, brittle hair, and possibly hair thinning or loss. The omega-3 fatty acids are especially important, such as those found in fish-oil.

B-vitamin deficiencies are common. Some people, especially people who are blood type A, do not absorb B vitamins very well from food. In particular a vitamin in the B family called biotin is crucial for proper hair and nail growth. In high doses, 5-
1000
8 grams daily (5000-8000 mg) of biotin can be effective in restoring head-hair growth, with no known side-effects. Some specialty shampoos feature biotin for this reason.

A deficiency in manganese or other minerals may contribute to hair loss, so you’ll want to make sure you’re eating a very healthy diet or taking a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement.

Other Female Hair Loss Treatments

Hair transplants consist of removal of tiny plugs of hair from areas where the hair is continuing to grow and placing them in areas that are balding. This can cause minor scarring in the donor areas and carries a modest risk for skin infection. The procedure usually requires multiple transplantation sessions and may be expensive. Results, however, are often good and permanent.

Suturing of hair pieces to the scalp is not recommended as it can result in scars, infections, and abscess of the scalp. The use of hair implants made of artificial fibers was banned by the FDA because of the high rate of infection.

Hair weaving, hairpieces, or change of hairstyle may disguise female hair loss and improve cosmetic appearance.

Acne At My Age?

When the 30s hit, you worked to raise little Johnnie or Suzie to be a model kid. Now that your hitting the fabulous 40s, you should be coasting through life, right. Well, why are you suddenly dealing with the cosmetic double whammy of acne and wrinkles? Even your insurance company figures that you should have gotten rid of acne by the age of 25.

The number people over 30 needing acne treatments has climbed to the extent that a report published in Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology recommends raising the age for insurance coverage of the acne drug tretinoin to at least 40. The authors of the report, Drs. Steven Feldman and Alan Fleischer, add that many insurance companies refuse to pay for tretinoin prescriptions for patients older than 25.

Cosmetic Catch 22 Even if your insurance company leaves you to fend for yourself, you still have options for freeing yourself from acne and wrinkles. At first, coping with acne and wrinkles may seem like a cosmetic catch 22. Do you dry your skin with acne cleansers containing benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, and worsen your wrinkles? Or, do you smear on the moisturizer to smooth the wrinkles, but cope with the zits brought on by the extra oil or sensitivity to a new product?

There’s a smarter way to handle acne and wrinkles.

1. Interpret the acne

2. Allow your skin to improve as you use self-awareness to remove zits.

Interpret the acne

While dealing with acne and wrinkles, target the acne first because acne is an autoimmune disease. Having an autoimmune disease means that your thoughts, emotions, and/or environment are affecting you in an adverse way and require immediate attention. Thus, acne may reveal that you need to relax more, change your eating habits, reframe your interpersonal dialogue, stop dating that jerk from the office and/or make another beneficial alteration to your lifestyle.

Zits arrive on your face to report on some unpleasant activities within your body and life. Once you get feedback from these zits, you can take action to send the zits away while augmenting your health in the process.

Acne is usually an indication various hidden or overlooked health problems. Here’s a sample of the questions you should ask yourself when dealing with acne so that you can unravel the mystery behind your zits. Are you:

Regular?

About 70% of your immune system is located in your intestines. If this area is blocked with waste, your immuno-defenses are down. So, instead of waste leaving your body via the rectum, it chooses to leave through the skin. Waste leaving the skin can cause an infection that presents itself as acne.

Tense?

Tension likewise reduces the vigor of the immune system. Take a few deep breaths throughout the day to calm your body. Take a long walk in the fresh air to wind down.

Eating nutritionally?

Cases of acne have been improved with consuming foods containing zinc, essential fatty acids, vitamin A and a host of other nutrients. All of these vital nutrients are available in leafy green vegetables, fruits and olive oil.

Worried about unresolved issues?

Not resolving personal issues creates conflict and tension in the body. Again, these issues most be addressed to avoid undue stress within the body.

Exercising daily?

Exercise reduces stress and gives you an opportunity to subconsciously contemplate challenges that you may be facing. Physical activity also keeps your muscles and intestines toned, which keeps encourages regularity.

Changing pillowcase frequently?

Using a dirty pillowcase aggravates an acne condition. Your face naturally secretes oils during the night. These oils are sticky. So if you pillowcase if dirty, you are allowing your face to collect extra waste during the night, which could further clog your pores.

Moving or changing your job/career?

New demands or feelings of lose can sometimes accompany change. Transfer these emotions into something constructive by writing in a journal or envisioning how these changes are going to benefit you. Find comfort in these changes and opportunities for new beginnings.

Experiencing excessive facial hair growth and erratic periods?

Conditions such as acne, excessive facial hair, and erratic periods could indicate an androgen disorder or other underlying hormonal imbalances. Your doctor can provide you with a series of endocrine tests to ascertain your hormone levels and what corrective actions you should take. Ricardo Azziz, M.D, who serves as Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Director of the Center for Androgen-Related Disorders at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, estimates that 80 percent of women with excessive androgen levels suffer from an endocrine disorder called polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Dr. Azziz adds that women with PCOS often have insulin resistance and are at increased risk for developing Type II diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

Once the acne is under control you can move on to the wrinkles. Another reason for treating the zits first is because if you alter your lifestyle in such as way as to free yourself from acne, and you doing this in a healthy and patient fashion, you will actually lessen the number of wrinkles you have.

Health is wholeness and beauty is a reflection of robust health. You’ll never buy robust health in a jar. It is a mind, body, spirit and environmental support system that garners full-bodied health. Lets look at want you actually need from a “beauty cream”.

Face Cream Education There are five basic ingredients in any given anti-aging or anti-wrinkling cream.

1. The oil or moisturizer

2. The preservatives to keep the cream from spoiling.

3. A scent or flavor

4. A color

5. The active ingredient.

Only one of these components is essential, the oil. The preservative is only needed to keep the cream useful. Your face does not need preservation because the skin is alive. Since some people have allergies to scents and colors in cosmetics, the body says that these two ingredients are not necessary. The active ingredient is usually the latest cosmetic drug or multivitamin that is supposed to lift or dramatically rever
1000
se your age by 5-20 years.

Researchers S. Jay Olshansky, Leonard Hayflick and Bruce A. Carnes bluntly comment on the antics of cosmetic companies in their report No Truth to the Fountain of Youth, published in the June 2002 edition of Scientific American. The authors warn everyone aiming to reverse the signs of times on their face that, Ӆ anyone purporting to offer an anti-aging product today is either mistaken or lying”.

I bet you are thinking, “Won’t that oil make acne worse?” The answer is not if you are using the right oil. Some essential oils such as bergamont, lavender, lemon, neroli, sandalwood, tea tree and ylang ylang have cleansing and antibacterial properties which help combat acne infections. Other essential oil like geranium, clary sage and orange regulate the production of oil on the face. When mixed with a carrier oil such as jojoba or camellia, these essential oils are ideal moisturizers.

Nothing that you put on your face will truly change your appearance. Creams are useful, but they are only one instrument in an orchestra of anti-aging concerts. Health starts on the inside. If you want to improve your beauty start with how you treat yourself and feed yourself. I mean not only what foods you eat but what thoughts you eat.

You may eat thoughts of the sort, “I can’tŔ, “I had a stressful day”, “I’m tired ofŔ, “I can’t wait untilŔ, “I’m getting old”, “My body isn’t as healthy as it used to be”. The menu is endless. If you want to look young and healthy, you have to think young and healthy thoughts. Here’s steps to jumpstart your quest:

Start by changing your thinking. Develop your own youth model, i.e. with steps you’ll take to maintain your vitality and stick to it.

Enjoy nutritious foods. A study in the Journal of American College of Nutrition found that eating a variety of fruits and vegetables and using olive oil every day could help keep wrinkles away. The researchers found that people who ate a diet rich in green leafy vegetables, beans, olive oil, nuts and multigrain breads, while avoiding butter, red meat and sugary goodies, were less predisposed to wrinkling. Researchers believe that antioxidant vitamins, such as A, C and E, which are found in fruits and vegetables, may help protect the skin from environmental damage.

Use a gentle cleanser each day.

Steam your face everyday for 5-15 minutes, especially if your have acne. The steam removes waxy build-up on the skin while it stimulates circulation. This combo of benefits cleans to pores to reduce the possibility of acne while firming up the skin and facial muscles.

Exfoliate your skin daily.

Moisturize your face in the morning and evening with natural oils. In addition to the acne fighting oils listed above, you can mix essential oils such as frankinsense, myrrh, neroli and rose to help encourage the growth of new skin cells. You can create a moisturizer by diluting 1-3 of your favorite essential oils in a carrier oil such as jojoba or camellia oil in a ration of 1 part essential oil to 3 parts carrier oil.

Massage your face daily when you apply your facial oil.

Lie down on an incline bench for 5-20 minutes each day to let the blood flow to your head.

Wear a sunhat in the sun.

Give yourself a light skin peel once a month.

Finally, forty can still be fabulous and your beauty-plan a lot less enigmatic. Just remember the basics, interpret the messages of your zits, and educate yourself about wrinkle creams- you don’t need them.

Natural Remedies for PCOS

The good news is that following the right natural remedy plan for PCOS will reduce or even elliminate further occurrence of PCOS symptoms. When your body is at its peak or optimal health, all of its systems are in balance. …

PCOS and Hypothyroidism/weight loss – Low Carb Friends

Hi! I was wondering if anyone was able to relieve their PCOS symptoms when their thyroid was in check. I have not gotten my period in 5 months since.

Could my infertility be polycystic ovary syndrome? – KIVITV.COM …

No single test can be used to diagnose PCOS. Your doctor will take your medical history and do a physical exam to look for symptoms of PCOS. You may also have blood tests to check hormone levels, and an ultrasound to check the ovaries …

Hope you enjoy the read as much as I did and please if you have something to say, use the comments form below to let everyone know your thoughts.

Have a great day!

How likely is it to be diagnosed with PCOS without having all of the symptoms?

I went for my yearly exam a few weeks ago and the doctor decided that I may have PCOS because I’ve been having irregular periods lately. I am overweight, and have the problems with facial hair. They did the bloodwork and only my insulin and testosterone levels were elevated. I had my daughter in 2004 and had no trouble conceiving her, and before her my periods were totally regular. I just feel as though I don’t fit the profile for having PCOS. Has anyone else been diagnosed with it but had a similar history as mine?

Yoga During Your Pregnancy – How Safe Is It?

If you are yoga fanatic and just recently discovered that you are pregnant, you may still be able to do your yoga exercises. Contrary to what others thinks, Yoga is good for you and your unborn child. Practicing yoga will not hurt the baby! Instead you will be creating a healthy environment for the baby if you learn to do the yoga poses correctly.

A word of caution, there are some poses that you will want to avoid. You need to aware of those harmful poses and master only the poses that are suggested as prenatal yoga. Learn about these poses before you begin to do yoga. Ask your Obstetrician for recommendation. Be 100% sure that you know what you are doing, as you don’t want to hurt yourself or the baby.

Yoga is beneficial – it is a mental exercise as well as a physical one. For those who learn to utilize yoga as a meditation tool, they are able to relax and control their breathing. This will come in handy when you are in labor, particularly if you are opting to give birth naturally and without the use of any drugs. You will learn how to remain calm in your later stages of your pregnancy, as many new mothers get easily frustrated.

You must learn the rules that you will need to follow when practicing yoga during your pregnancy. First, stay hydrated by frequently stopping for water breaks. This is because if you get too overheated, your core body temperature rises, which can harm the baby. In view of this scenario, “hot” yoga is dangerous and should be avoided while you are pregnant. Eat some extra calories since you are eating for two; however, do ensure that you exercise to burn those extra calories from yourself and the baby.

Avoid certain poses that can be harmful towards the baby. Lying flat on your back, for example, can disrupt blood flow to your brain and to the uterus. You will feel dizzy and it may cause developmental problems for your baby. This is especially true when you have passed your first trimester, as it is just not safe. Also skip positions that are inverted, or those that require great amounts of balance. Remember that your uterus and abdomen is growing in size every single day, so you will never be able to fully get used to your new shape and stay balanced.

Bear in mind
1000
that you do must not fall as you can hurt yourself and also jeopardize your pregnancy.

If the positions taught include major twisting or stretching in the abdominal region, remember that they are not meant for you to try out. Finally, avoid transitions in which you must stand quickly from a laying or sitting position, since this can be uncomfortable and dangerous as it will cause you to feel dizzy and restrict blood flow to your uterus.

Fret not, there are other yoga positions that you will find to be helpful and useful during your pregnancy. Most pregnant women will practice safe yoga like stretching their body.
Work with your yoga instructor and ask for his or her recommendations. Most importantly, always consult your Obstetrician to ensure that your pregnancy period is going to be smooth sailing as well as you are able to stay healthy.

PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is a common hormonal imbalance affecting approximately one in 10 women. It is estimated that a fifth of women have PCO (Polycystic Ovaries) and a half to three quarters of these experience symptoms at some point in their lives.

The hormone imbalance creates too much oestrogen and increased testosterone on the blood and not enough follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) in the ovaries to release an egg regularly.

The condition was first described in 1934 by Irving Stein and Michael Leventhal and is therefore often referred to as either ‘hyperandrogen anovulation syndrome’ or Stein Leventhal Syndrome’.

So what is the difference between having PCOS and Polycystic Ovaries?

PCOS sufferers have polycystic ovaries and the symptoms associated with the syndrome. You can have PCO without actually having PCOS.

What are the symptoms?

It can be difficult to diagnose PCOS as women with the condition can display any single symptom or a combination. Very few women have the same set of symptoms.

FACT: About 80% of women with PCOS have polycystic ovaries present in their body and around 50% of those with Polycystic Ovaries have PCOS and the rest have PCO.

Symptoms can include:

Irregular periods – Some women will have normal periods, while most will have some changes to their cycle. Bleeding can either be really heavy or lighter. Periods may also be or become irregular and could also stop altogether. In teens, the diagnosis of PCOS may be delayed as this could possibly be normal.

Unwanted bodily hair – Also known as Hirsutism, this symptom is due to the excess in androgens (male hormones such as testosterone).

Acne – This symptom is also brought on by an increase in androgens.

Chronic fatigue, fatigue

Joint pain

Hair loss – Also known as Alopecia, is the thinning of scalp hair in a ‘male-like’ pattern.

Tender breasts

Bloating

Mood swings

Difficulty in conceiving – This is usually related to the lack of egg release or ovulation and can be complicated by being overweight. There is also an increased risk of recurrent miscarriage.

Depression

Abdominal pain

Dizziness

Problems with being overweight – Studies show that two thirds of PCOS sufferers are affected. Weight gain is usually in the abdominal region and is associated with the body not processing insulin normally. The insulin resistance is caused by weight gain and in itself does not necessarily cause weight gain. Those who do not have this symptom are either in the normal weight range or underweight.

Increased tendency to faint

Cysts

Small follicles on the ovaries

Headaches

Thyroid problems

Poor memory

Panic attacks

Constant thirst

Extreme cravings

If left untreated PCOS can lead to various life threatening conditions such as:

Diabetes

Heart disease

Cardiovascular disease

Endometrial cancer – This can occur due to anovulatory menstrual cycles.

Uterine cancer

High blood pressure (hypertension)

High cholesterol

Kidney problems

FACT: When chronic anovulation (lack of egg being released regularly) occurs the lining of the uterus (endometrium) may thicken and may lead to abnormal cell changes and an increased risk of uterine and endometrial cancer as women age.

What is the cause?

The exact cause of PCOS is still relatively unknown. With the studies that have been done to date, there appears to be a hereditary and lifestyle link. It is also believed to involve the ovaries inability to produce the correct proportions of hormone. I think Collette Harris describes it best, “The pituitary gland senses that the ovary is not working properly, and in turn releases abnormal amounts of luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), which are both linked to the ovary’s ability to develop and release and egg. It is when this ability to ovulate becomes disabled that infertility can occur in women with PCOS.”

FACT: Ovarian cysts are follicles or eggs which have matured but have not yet been released.

Diagnosing PCOS

As there are many symptoms associated with PCOS, a combination of factors is used to diagnose the condition. Currently there is no one test to diagnose PCOS.

Before visiting your doctor to get a thorough examination, find out your family medical history, write down any symptoms you may have and any thing in your medical history that you think may be relevant.

Tests that can be performed are the following:

Transvaginal ultrasound – uterus, ovaries and the pelvis.

Blood tests for Androgens (testosterone, DJEAS, andostenedione), Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG) and Free Androgen Index (FAI).

Blood tests for oestradiol, FSH and LH.

Blood tests for Thyroid TSH and Prolactin levels which can mimic PCOS symptoms.

Blood tests for fasting glucose, insulin and cholesterol.

There are also other tests for the Ovaries, Adrenal or Pituitary Glands that can be done to rule out any conditions associated.

FACT: If there are more than 15 follicles visible in an ovary on a pelvic ultrasound it is diagnosed as PCO.

Is there a cure?

At present there is no cure for the condition although symptoms can be treated with varying degrees of success and by sorting out or improving any underlying hormonal and metabolic problems, the cysts will often either disappear or reduce in number. The treatment of PCOS depends partially on the stage of life the woman is in.

By taking the contraceptive pill, it can help to balance out the menstrual cycle of a woman with PCOS, mask any symptoms and prevent the risk of uterine cancer. Treatment for infertility can include weight loss programs; ovulation medications such as Follistim, Letrozole, Clomiphene and Fonal-F; ovarian drilling surgery and IVF.

A diuretic pill called Spironolactone can assist in reversing acne or excess hair growth. Metformin is used to treat Type 2 Diabetes affecting the action of insulin and can assist in reducing the symptoms of PCOS.

To find out what you can do to treat your symptoms please consult your specialist.

What can weight loss do?

Even a weight loss of 5% will reduce insulin resistance and can result in the improvement of symptoms. Physical activity, even without weight loss is effective in reducing insulin resistance although it is highly recommended that you combine your exercise and meal plan to get the most benefits.

Benefits of weight loss can include:

Ovulation restoration

Reduction of symptoms

Reduce the risks of diabetes and insulin resistance

Reduce the risks of cardiovascular disease

Benefits of physical activity includes:

Weight loss

Improved self esteem

Reduces the risk of Cardiovascular Disease

Improves symptoms

To aide weight loss and a reduction in symptoms it is recommended to adhere to a meal plan similar to diabetics with low GI foods. A high protein and low carbohydrate meal plan is great in the initial weight loss phase.

Unfortunately bty949950 (real name Mengele?) the waters, far from being muddied, are crystal clear.
———————————————————- -
———————————————————- -
You say “The funniest thing about people arguing from a basically indefensible position is that they often throw a ton of irrelevant and unsubstantiated allegations into their arguments in an attempt to muddy the waters. You’re a perfect example of this, John Evans.

Speaking as an Irish bi-sexual (see how assumptions never work?)”
———————————————————- -
———————————————————- -
I made no such assumption. With a handle like bty949950 you could well be a V.W.Golf? Anyway, how many times have you used this crutch? It would make no difference if you were a Hawaiian nose flautist. Out of curosity was the ‘little’ correct?
———————————————————- -
———————————————————- -

You go on to say “I never suggested that any stigma should be attached to people being obese.”
———————————————————- -
———————————————————- -
You said that obese people had bad genes. If that’s not stigmatising what is? It is also inaccurate.

Obesity is a complex disease for which no single cause or cure exists. You gain weight when you take in more calories than you burn off. But obesity is influenced by many other factors as well: family history, the type of work you do, race, and environment.

So may I assume you are an ignorant Irish bi-sexual?
———————————————————- -
———————————————————- -

You continue “I said that people who have medical conditions causing obesity AND a failure to conceive are probably nature’s way of preventing the passing on of bad genes. Bad genetics are a fact of life. No one with any sense would breed puppies from a $%^& with known genetic problems,”

———————————————————- -
———————————————————- -

You don’t know much about dog breeding either, although Most dogs have had the bad genes needed to survive in the wild (ideally as wolves, which I assume (there I go again) people like you hunted to extinction) bred out of them by genetic engineers. Rejects were of course clubbed over the head or drowned. Presumably what you’d like to see happen to the overweight.
———————————————————- -
———————————————————- -

Finally you say “so why the heck would we knowingly produce a *child* with poor health? The increasing number of children being born with hereditary illnesses is a direct result of people ‘playing god’ when plain common sense should dictate caution.”
———————————————————- -
———————————————————- -

It’s you chum who’s playing God, which is exactly what The Third Reich tried to do (actually they played Satan).

How insultingly patronising to misstate the obvious. Has it not occured to you, that people with hereditary diseases, of all sorts; think long and hard, before getting pregnant?

In conclusion, is it in order to assume you are an ignorant little bi-sexual, Irish Nazi?

15 Serious Health Consequences Of Being Overweight Or Obese

An estimated 97 million adults in the United States are overweight or obese. The distinction between overweight and obese is a matter of quantity. Obese individuals simply have more body fat. Both these physical conditions significantly increase morbidity from many well known chronic health conditions. Following are a variety of common conditions found in overweight and obese indiviuals:

1) Metabolic Syndrome X. A cluster of cardiac symptoms which increase the risk for a heart attack or stroke.

2) Angina Pectoris. An often severe, constricting chest pain.

3) Pre-Diabetes. Reversible, but if left unchecked could lead to diabetes type 2. Diabetes type 2 has risk factors such as kidney disease, heart failure, amputation and blindness.

4) Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. PCOS is a hormonal disorder which leads to infertility in women. It can also cause excess facial hair, male pattern baldness and certain skin conditions.

5) Loss of muscle tone and bone density due to inability or refusal to exercise. As time goes by, there is muscle loss and the mineral content of the bones decreases. Loss of muscle tone leads to loss of strength to do simple daily activities. Loss of bone density could lead to dangerous falls and fractures.

6) High Blood Pressure (HBP). Normal Blood Pressure is 120/80 (mm hg) and represents the pressure within your arterial system. Overweight and obese individuals often have readings above 140/90 which is high. HBP is known as the “silent killer” because it has no symptoms.

7) High Cholesterol Levels. Cholesterol profiles tend to be suboptimal. This can lead to other forms of heart and circulatory disease.

Coronary Artery Disease. This is caused when plaque builds up inside the arteries that supply the heart. Restricting the blood supply could cause a heart attack.

9) Arteriosclerosis. This involves a hardening of the arteries, making them hard and brittle often leading to a stroke.

10) High blood insulin levels. This is a risk factor for diabetes and heart disease.

11) Gallstones and other g
1000
all bladder related problems.

12) Psychological imbalances such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders and low self esteem.

13)Sleep apnea. This can lead to a heart attack by restricting oxygen to the brain and cause other respiratory difficulties.

14)Urinary control problems such as incontinence.

15)Cancer. Some types of cancer including colon, prostrate, and breast have been linked to obesity.

The number of both adults and children falling into the subgroups of overweight and obese grows each year. New research is linking overfat with more and more chronic health conditions. The above list is by no means inclusive. There are hundreds, perhaps thousands of ailments where an individual’s percentage body fat may have an influence. A word to the wise is to maintain a normal percentage body fat for optimal health and living.

This is probably the most asked question in regards to PCOS. Can I get pregnant? Will I ever be able to have children? It is a scary thought for those of you who’ve always dreamed of a family. The thought of never being able to have children terrified me! The lack of information and education is what causes this misleading, and incorrect thought.

It is a fact that PCOS is the most common cause of female infertility today. This is mostly due to the irregular cycles/ovulation problems and hormonal imbalances, such as high testosterone and low progesterone levels. If you don’t have regular cycles, you won’t ovulate monthly, and if your hormones are out of wack it makes it quite difficult to conceive, and to have a successful pregnancy.

Women who have tried for over 1 year to conceive, with no success, are automatically tagged as infertile. This “Scarlet Letter” can haunt us, and lead to a lot of run-around, constant misdiagnosis, and STRESS. It took doctors well over 9 years to diagnose me, despite the obvious PCOS symptoms that were SCREAMING at the doctors. I am at a loss as to why PCOS is so often misdiagnosed when it is so common. The symptoms are clear and unique, there are tests to confirm it or to rule it out, yet doctors still misdiagnose or ignore our issues….. OR they just tag women as having PCOS when they’re not sure, because they can’t figure out a real cause. Horrible!

Once you are finally diagnosed, you’re often popped full of pills, mostly birth control. Again, as mentioned before its a band-aid fix and certainly does not help those of us who want to have children, it can actually make the problem/infertility issues worse.

The answer to the initial question of, “Can I get pregnant if I have PCOS?” is…..

YES YOU CAN !

Tons of other women with PCOS (including myself) have gotten pregnant, and have had successful pregnancies. It just takes the right “combo” of medications and treatments to achieve this. These medications are best managed by a Reproductive Endocrinologist – PHEW, what a name! An RE is otherwise known as an “infertility doctor”. They are often the most experienced physician when it comes to dealing with the ovulation inducing medications required for women with PCOS to ovulate correctly, and to therefore increase our chances of getting pregnant.

Look up Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. This can be related to unresolved stressful situations.

Similar to ME, but ME normally relates to a previous virus.

I’m sure the Doctors have tried everything for you but sometimes it has to be a partnership. You know how your body reacts and you understand it best. Check out anything you can on the web and if your doctor is understanding perhaps you can find a solution together.

Female Infertility And Its Common Causes

Female infertility refers to the difficulty or inability of a woman to conceive a child on her own without medication or fertility treatments. Female infertility is relatively common, and becomes more prevalent as the age of the woman increases. Some infertility issues can be resolved with a change in lifestyle or medications, while other issues are permanent and another option, such as in vitro fertilization, may be necessary to achieve conception.

Common Reasons For Female Infertility

One of the most common factors for female infertility is age. Women are at their peak for conceiving a child between the ages of 18 and 27. After the age of 27, fertility begins to decline slowly until the age of 35, when fertility drops drastically. As a woman reaches her late 40s to early 50s, fertility becomes near impossible due to age alone, as the body can no longer easily support a healthy pregnancy to term.

Thrombophilia is also a major reason for infertility issues. Thrombophilia is an abnormality in individuals that prevents them from developing blood clots. The disorder is hereditary, and affects as many as 10% of individuals in the country. Because blood is unable to clot, thrombophilia can cause excessive bleeding that does not allow for conception, or does not support a healthy pregnancy and ends in a miscarriage soon after conception.

Female Infertility And Reproductive Organs

Many female infertility issues are directly linked to problems with their reproductive system. Polycystic ovary syndrome, more commonly known as PCOS, is an endocrine disorder that can make it near impossible for sufferers to conceive. About 5% of all women are affected by the disorder, and it is the most common hormonal disorder in women between the ages of 18 and 27, as well as the leading cause of female infertility.

Anovulation is a disorder where the ovaries fail to release an egg during a cycle. Therefore, ovulation never takes place. While this can sometimes be mistaken for the beginning of menopause, anovulatory cycles are very common in women of childbearing age, and is the second cause of female infertility problems due to reproductive issues. Anovulation cannot be cured, but it can be managed with hormonal drugs to keep the cycle normal and to enc
ourage ovulation. Often times, an ovulation will correct itself in spurts, allowing for conception to take place when the disorder is in a period of remission.

Female infertility problems are more common than male fertility problems, but that doesn’t mean that women who suffer with a fertility problem with never be able to conceive. With modern medicine and new technologies being developed every day, women who would have never been able to conceive 20 years ago now have a chance to go on and have two, three, four, or more healthy children in their lifetime. The key is to seek help as soon as you know you have a problem, and learn to manage your disorder and to keep your options open for conception alternatives.
