Have a great day!

I have Pcos,which diet better?

I have pcos, have been to the gynaecologist, who say i am not in need of any tretament, unless i have probs trying to conceive in future,i am taking the pill and metformin to aid symptoms of it,and have a facial lotion to use twice a day to help with acne, which is at mo i can say under control,i've only managed to lose half a stone, and things are going very slow, also because i feel i am not really trying with one thing more than another.
The dietician i saw a few months back told me to watch by count sugar and fat intake in a 100gms,but i was concerned that although she told me to reduce my starchy carb intake that under the levels she's told me to follow, that i could still stuff aload of other stuff day to day,or to fill up and replace things i've had to cut out.
The gynaecologist told me there was no specific diet to follow, but then said as your body is resistant to things, and insulin carbs and insulin don't go well together,so i was to reduce these, but then also not over do my calorie intake no matter what method of eating i try!!
So should i just reduce my calorie intake,as this is what my cousin did although she is not known to have same probs, and ate less and went gym and has lost stones, looks great,or shall i just reduce my carb intake?!
I'm sort of doing a bit of both genrally i think and although its keeping weight down,i juts feel like i will never get to where i want.
Any advice please,thankyou.

The reason is that these 5 foods that I listed below may contain growth hormones, antibiotics, food colorings, etc…

We know that women with PCOS have to avoid all foods with added hormones because of the hormone surge it can create in our body. Remember the secret to getting your PCOS in remission is stabilizing out you hormones and blood sugar levels.

Eating these foods in an organic form required you to seek out stores that carry these foods. Your safest bet is always a health food store, although some grocery stores are starting carry a lot of organic brands as well.

Eating organic does take some work and research to see what stores carry these products in an organic form. But it’s well worth the effort. This does not mean that you have to get rid of everything in your refrigerator and replace it with organic; all it simply means is that foods that may contain growth hormones, we should avoid.

In general everyone should, but more importantly woman with PCOS.

.

Try these 5 organic foods the next time you go shopping.

Once you try these foods in an organic form you should notice a cleaner taste, and feel better overall from not ingesting extra hormones into your body.

Try eating these organic foods for a two weeks and see if your body notices a difference.

5 Organic Foods Every PCOS Women Should Eat:

1) For starter’s yogurt and/or diary products should be organic. For starters Organic diary products are made without the use of added hormones or antibiotics and can have higher levels of omega-3s. Organic dairy products are not only good for women with PCOS – they can be much less damaging to the environment. So next your reach for a snack in the afternoon, make sure you reach for an organic yogurt and/or diary products.

2) Salads are equally as important as diary to have in an organic state. The reason is conventional salads have some of the highest levels of toxic pesticides. So it’s best to choose organic greens. When making your salad, try adding in some extra organic vegetables and boost your intake of antioxidants.

3) Apples are not too missed. Apples also contain toxic pesticides. With that being said its best to have its best to buy organic apples. You may want to start looking up local farmers markets that come to your area so you can stock up on fresh organic fruits and vegetables that don’t contain any harmful pesticides.

4) Tomatoes. Yes these colorful round tomatoes are also best when they are organic so you can again avoid all those harmful pesticides. Fresh organic tomatoes are so health for you; they provide your body with lycopene, an antioxidant that may lower cancer and heart disease risks and may do other wonderful things as well.

5) Don’t forget your Meat products. Most people don’t realize that animals are treated in such an inhumane way; by injecting animals with growth hormones, antibiotics, force fed, etc…that why meat is so important to buy organic. The best quality of meat is from grass fed cows and it’s often leaner than other meats and contains more of the good omega 3 fats. Try switching over any of your meats to organic and notice the cleaner, fresher taste.

- Try these delicious ways products in an organic form and notice how much cleaner and fresher your meals will taste.

- Now that you have this information isn’t this a great way to spell ‘relief’ for yourself?

- I think so and so do the many PCOS sufferers I have been fortunate to work with.

Hi All,

My Doctor thinks I might have PCOS so is sending me for an ultrasound and to get some blood tests done, he says that the Blood tests should be taken at the same time I am on my period, is this really the case? I am not so sure as my friend who was recently diagnosed with PCOS was not told the same and she got her blood taken when she was not on her period.

My cycle is all over the place as it is so I can't book ahead for an appointment to get my blood taken and it is a nightmare getting an appointment with the nurse as they are so busy. (i'm in the UK) so if it didnt have to be while I am on my period it would make things a lot easier.

Most treatment for PCOS is aimed at stabilizing your hormones to increase your chances of achieving and maintaining pregnancy. Your doctor will also monitor your blood pressure at regular intervals and look for early-warning signs of …

The much touted red wine compound resveratrol shows some promise as a future treatment for type 2 diabetes, but drinking wine or taking resveratrol supplements isn't likely to do diabetic people much good, researchers say. …

The idea that when something doesn't feel right a doctor should be able to diagnose and recommend appropriate treatment is somewhat of a Utopian notion. In reality, patients are often either given the trendy diagnosis or treated as …

Have a great day!

Losing weight and eating right with PCOS can be tough. The PCOS body doesn’t process insulin normally, so a controlled diet should be adhered to remain healthy. But if weight loss isn’t on your agenda, how can a person with PCOS eat right and how different is that diet than what you’re already use to?

The key for PCOS sufferers is the same non-sufferers: Balance. You don’t need to go out and purchase special foods that are only for PCOS sufferers. The best thing you can do is to stick to a diet of veggies, fruit, whole grains and lean meats (stay away from processed foods, this is even more important for women with PCOS). Another good tip is to start reading food labels at the grocery store, if you don’t already. Try to buy foods with high fibre and avoid low fiber foods like regular pasta and white rice.

Reading food labels is just the beginning, however. You have to understand what you’re reading to get the full benefit. Foods that are listed as “fat-free” sound like something you would want to add to your diet, but be careful. Most of the time, these foods are high in sugar, and that can be bad news for women with PCOS. At the same time, foods that are listed as “sugar-free” can still raise your insulin level if they contain high amounts of white baking flour or other high-carb ingredients. The best thing to do to satisfy your sweet tooth is to look for foods like sugar-free Jell-O, diet pop, Crystal Light and sugar-free popsicles because they are not only sugar free, but carb free, as well.

If you can’t stay away from those refined carbs, try to slow them down by adding protein or a little fat. If you have to have bread with dinner, try putting some peanut butter or, even better, hummus on it. The addition of the protein or fat will slow the absorption of the carbs into your blood stream and help keep the insulin levels down, too.

Also, don’t forget that not all fats are created equal. Try to stick with the healthy fats found in foods like nuts, avocados, fish, canola and olive oil, as opposed to foods high in saturated fats such as margarine, cheese, red meat and mayonnaise.

Finally, some common sense tips to keep in mind when it comes to eating right with PCOS. The most important thing is attitude. Don’t get down about not having your favourites and stay positive about what you can have. You will feel better, look better and be happier if you don’t look at your PCOS diet as a burden, but as a chance to try new things and feel healthier.

Try not to get frustrated because you don’t lose weight right away, the goal isn’t necessarily to shed pounds quickly, a healthy diet is a long-term eating plan to keep your body healthy. Lastly, please consult a doctor before you make any drastic changes to your eating habits or patterns. You should already have a doctor helping you with your PCOS, have him or her recommend a dietician who can help put together a diet that will work for you!

Because a woman’s body doesn’t produce enough eggs when she suffers from PCOS, it can cause infertility and contribute to difficulties in falling pregnant.

Most cases of PCOS are not genetic, but they are all related to hormonal abnormalities. The reason not enough eggs are produced is because of an excess of the androgen, or ‘male’ hormones. Both men and women have androgen hormones, but men have them in much greater quantities. This hormonal imbalance means that the cysts that are a normal part of producing eggs, do not grow. So a woman with PCOS has a lot of small cysts on her ovaries that do not mature to release their eggs. Normally, once this process happened, the cysts would go.

Another consequence of the higher levels of androgen hormones is the increased risk of obesity, heart disease, diabetes, as well as a likelihood of having more facial hair.

Interestingly, low carb diets such as the zone diet may help overweight women with PCOS. A recent study of 11 non diabetic, overweight women with PCOS who had an average age of 33 was conducted. The study compared a ’standard’ diet with 56% carbohydrates and 16% protein, with a lower carb diet of 43% carbohydrate and 15% protein. The fat component of the lower carb diet was a lot higher than the standard diet, by 14%. This is higher than it would be in the Zone diet. The fat content of the low carb diet was almost evenly split between polyunsaturated fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids. The fat content of the standard diet was almost evenly split between the two types of fatty acids, but was slightly higher (by 3%) in the monounsaturated variety.

A third diet, one high in both carbohydrates and monounsaturated fatty acids, was also compared. The study participants only followed each diet for 16 days. They had a 3 week break between each diet, and tried all 3.

Because production of the androgen hormones are influenced by the presence of insulin, the researchers were interested in finding out whether a low carb diet could reduce the amount of insulin circulating in the body. They believed this would have an indirectly positive effect on PCOS.

The results of this study found that whilst hormones that were circulating weren’t significantly affected by the lower carb diet, the women’s cholesterol, fasting insulin levels, free fatty acids, and their response to insulin were positively affected. The fact that their response to insulin improved is an indicator of the possible benefit of a low carb diet to PCOS sufferers. And because the women only followed the diet for 16 days, this may be why their levels of circulating insulin were not more prominently affected.

The authors of the study state that: “Because elevated insulin is thought to contribute to the endocrine abnormalities in PCOS, a reduction in insulin would be expected to ultimately result in an improved endocrine profile.”

They go on to say that these improvements indicate that using a low carb type diet, with a lower calorie intake, would probably benefit overweight women who suffer from PCOS.

Not all low carb diets are created equal however. The Atkins diet has been associated with an increased risk of heart problems for some, as well as being implicated in the hospitalization of others.

A 40 year old woman was hospitalized with very high levels of acids in her blood as a result of following the Atkins diet strictly for about a month. The release of acids in the blood, called ketosis, is an indicator of the ’success’ of the Atkins diet, and is actually a result of the process of starving the body of certain nutrients beyond a threshold level. The nutrient being, of course, carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates are a source of energy for the body, the only source used by the brain. But when the body is deprived of carbohydrates after the threshold level, it will use alternate methods of metabolizing energy. It uses stored fats and protein, but this is not a very biologically efficient way of producing energy for the body. So, there are a lot of acidic metabolic by products, called ketones. These are released into the bloodstream, to be excreted by the body.

In the case of this woman, these metabolic by products weren’t excreted fast enough and built up in her bloodstream. She was vomiting 4 to 6 times a day. This build up of blood acids represented a dangerous situation and she was admitted to intensive care.

The Atkins Foundation responded that this woman must have had abnormal metabolic or clinical issues. But given that this woman, who was obese, is in a category at which the Atkins diet is marketed, there is a real cause for concern here. With obesity, there is a greater likelihood for both general medical problems, and metabolic problems. If an obese person did not have metabolic problems of one form or another, they would not be obese. Perhaps there were circumstances that were particular to this woman here, but until those potential dangers are understood more fully, this is a significant issue. It’s ironic that a diet should be implied as not being suitable for anyone with metabolic issues, particularly if this diet is marketed as a ‘way of life’ – that is, recommended for long term use.

The Zone Diet does not induce ketosis, nor does it lower the carbohydrate intake below minimum recommended levels. So, even though it is associated with ‘low carb’ and the Atkins diet, in the minds of many, it is in fact quite different, both in it’s effects on the body, and its recommendations. For women with PCOS, it may be a bit misleading or confusing…. we know we’re supposed to watch our carbs, only eat “good carbs” as this is what best controls our insulin resistance, therefore controlling our PCOS. But the question is, which diet or plan do we choose?

Below are the most common eating plans used by women with PCOS. I say eating plan because I don’t consider them “diets”. We are not starving ourselves, eating the wrong things for a short amount of time to lose weight, etc. This is a life long choice for us. If we want to control our PCOS and its symptoms, we need to chose an eating plan and stick to it, indefinitely.

Glycemic Index

The glycemic index (GI) is a system used to classify foods with carbohydrates on how fast they raise our blood-sugar levels. There are 3 general categories:

High GI Foods (GI value 70%2B)
These cause a fast rise in blood-glucose levels

Medium GI Foods (GI value 55-69) These cause a medium rise in blood-glucose

Low GI Carb Foods (GI value 54 or less) These cause a slow rise in blood-sugar

This is considered the best option for women with PCOS. A low-GI plan is a balanced diet based with medium and low GI carbs, plus healthy protein and fats (including plenty of healthy whole grains as well as fruits and vegetables. A great plan to follow is Weight Watchers, as they base their meals on the Glycemic index principal.

South Beach Diet

The SBD consists of lean proteins, healthy fats and oils, nuts, seeds, and fresh vegetables and fruits and is a favorable diet for PCOS. The theory is if you cut back on carbs, and eat a higher percentage of protein that your body will have less insulin responses to carbs. It consists of three phases, where you slowly add more carbs back into your meals. The point of the first phase is to get rid of cravings that PCOS’ers have for carbs by eliminating them completely. Then, as good carbs are added into back, you are less likely to lose control and binge. The types of carbs allowed on the SBD are those that score low on the glycemic index.

The Zone Diet

The Zone Diet is about balancing your hormones to control hunger on fewer calories but still getting the nutrients your body needs for long-term health. The Zone is a moderate-carbohydrate, moderate-protein, moderate fat diet that has approximately one gram of fat for every two grams of protein and three grams of carbs. These dietary ratios are based off of the dietary recommendations from the Joslin Diabetes Research Center at Harvard Medical School for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

The Zone’s meals include:

Low-fat protein

Low glycemic-load carbs (mostly fruits and vegetables)

Heart-healthy monounsaturated fats

Warning !!!!

Another common “low carb” plan is The Atkins diet. This is NOT recommended for women with PCOS, in fact it should be avoided completely. The Atkins diet has been associated with a large number of heart related conditions and even death. It focuses on completely removing carbs, and eating high fat, unhealthy proteins (such as hamburger, bacon, etc) which is why we need to stay FAR away.

Women with PCOS already have a higher risk of heart disease, high cholesterol/blood pressure and stroke, so adding a diet high in fatty proteins would only increase our risk. Plus, starving your body of the carbs it needs to survive only increases the risk even more.

Hello

I saw my family doctor on Monday. I have had one normal period all year and i have an overwhelming number of signs of pcos, which runs in my family. We have been ttc since feb. I'm 22 and hubby is 25. I am seeing a new obgyn tomorrow who is very hard to get into. She is backed up into december. Is there any chance she would be able to diagnose and maybe start me on Clomid? How long did it take you to get pregnant on Clomid? Is it likely she will get the ball moving tomorrow?

To increase fertility if you have PCOS, one popular option involves eating a specifically designed PCOS fertility diet. Polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, can play a significant role in infertility, particularly by a condition known as insulin resistance. By creating this resistance, PCOS encourages the body’s levels of insulin to rise, which in turn can keep the body from ovulating normally and the eggs from maturing properly. All of this can clearly affect fertility and a woman’s ability to conceive.

Issues with insulin can increase a woman’s chances of miscarrying. Additionally, insulin-related problems associated with PCOS can also make it difficult for the embryo to attach to the uterus, and they can serve as indicators for the potential emergence of type 2 diabetes. As frightening as this might sound, the good news is that many of these problems can be avoided by simply making the change to a PCOS fertility diet.

By making the decision to switch to a PCOS diet, women can increase their rate of spontaneous ovulation, improve the overall environment of the uterus, fight off diabetes, and decrease their overall risk of miscarriage. Here are 9 steps any woman can take to make the switch:

1.	Balance proteins and carbohydrates – Maintaining this balance can help prevent issues with the body’s insulin levels. By eating a balanced amount of proteins and carbohydrates, insulin levels are kept balanced.

2.	Eat foods that are low on the Glycemic index – These types of carbohydrates break down at a slower rate in the body, making sure that insulin levels don’t go through such dramatic spikes and drops.

3.	Eat lots of fiber – Foods like broccoli, celery, whole grains, and apples are all great sources of fiber. By eating lots of fiber, individuals with PCOS can slow the digestion of sugars as well as removing the excess estrogens in the body.

4.	Make mine 5 – Keep the metabolism working all day by eating 5 times a day. A light snack in between larger meals is usually the best approach to take – as long as the snacks are healthy.

5.	Keeps those acids fatty – Including fatty acids in the diet can help individuals lose weight, keep their hormones balanced, and prepare the body for conception. For a great source of fatty acids, consider adding fish oils and evening primrose oil to the diet.

6.	Exercise every day – It can be a hassle sometimes, but a diet plan that does not involve exercise will often fail. Generally, individuals participating in a PCOS diet should exercise five times a week for 30 minutes each day. Consider walking, jogging, or even lifting weights as components of the exercise plan.

7.	Go organic – Organic foods contain more vitamins and minerals in comparison to non-organic foods. Since the PCOS diet is high in protein, it is essential that participants consume organic animal proteins that come from animals that have not been treated hormones.

8.	Quit the coffee fix – Caffeine can cause levels of certain hormones to rise, which can in turn negatively affect the body’s ability to produce viable follicles during ovulation.

9.	Make good use of supplements – Issues with PCOS can often be managed with the help of certain PCOS herbs and PCOS supplements.

Herbal treatment for PCOS?

Has anyone benefited from herbal treatment for PCOS? If you have could you give the name of the medical herbalist or the herb that helped you to regularise your period?

The number one cause of infertility in women is called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Five to seven percent of all women are affected by PCOS which is a metabolic disorder. If it is left untreated, PCOS can greatly increase the risk of endometrial cancer. To make matter worse, women with PCOS are at a higher risk for such conditions as diabetes and heart disease. In the past, diet was never thought of as an important role in the treatment of this condition. Since the discovery of the benefits of insulin resistance, many experts now are sure that diet plays an important role in the treatment plan.

Even though there is still more research to be done it is still believed that with a proper diet, insulin levels can be reduced which will not only help with unstable menstrual cycles, acne and hirutism, it may also decrease the chances of diabetes and heart disease. Below are some diet recommendations that may help you to control your PCOS.

o	Low carbohydrate can cause dehydration so it is very important to drink at least 8 cups of a non carbonated drink. Of course water being the best choice.

o	Stay clear of carbohydrates by themselves. Instead, try to combine your carbs with a fat and/or protein

o	Make sure you space out the carbs you intake daily. This will ensure that you will have less of a rise in your blood sugar and insulin peak, rather then taking all your carbs in one sitting.

o	Make sure you exercise regularly, to help keep you performing at your peak levels.

o	Try to not lower your carb intake so low that you go into ketosis. Most pharmacies sell strips that you can test your urine to see where your ketone levels are at. Eating less than 40 grams of carbs per day can start ketosis.

o	Make sure to choose foods that are lower on the glycemic index as they will ensure blood sugar to rise more slowly.

o	Stay away from the carbs that trigger more cravings and/or hunger such as pasta.

o	Suggested mineral and vitamin supplements:

o	Take a daily multivitamin with minerals and if you are trying to get pregnant then make sure that it contains a folic acid of at least 400 mcg.

o	Try to take two to three 500mg of calcium daily. It is important to space them out as your body can only absorb so much at one time.

o	Keep your intake of saturated fats to a minimum for a healthy heart.

As with starting any new diet, be sure to consult the advice of your doctor, to make sure that you are doing what is right for you and your condition.
